Palate: Fresh notes of lemon/lime, green apple, pear, and vibrant acidity. Creamy mouthfeel with a long citrusy finish. Until next time… Cheers! Penina To leave a comment or if you have an inquiry, please contact me at wineknittercomments@gmail.com The art of writing letters seems to have vanished since the arrival of more sophisticated and faster ways to communicate. Sadly, emails and texts have replaced the more intimate and expressive pen to paper. When I was very young, writing and receiving letters was exciting. I remember the first box of stationery given to me, the feel of the onion skin paper in my hands, and the thrill that it would capture my thoughts and possibly immortalize me. And I loved the idea that someone might keep my letters and reread them every so often. Yes, at the age of eight, I was a true romantic and a bit dramatic, and I suppose I still am! So, when I received two beautiful bottles of Pinot Noir along with an elegant box of custom stationery from Belle Glos Wines, I was over the moon! The prospect of pouring a glass of opulent wine, writing a letter again, and mailing it to someone made me giddy! Fifth-generation Napa Valley winemaker Joe Wagner created Belle Glos Wines in 2001, inspired by his grandmother, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, co-founder of Caymus Vineyards. No stranger to wine, Joe knew by the age of 19 while working alongside his father at Caymus Vineyards that he would carry on his family’s winemaking legacy. Motivated by his grandmother, an avid Pinot Noir lover, Joe decided to focus on vineyard-designated Pinot Noirs from California’s best coastal regions. He has five vineyard sites that produce wines expressing the uniqueness of each vineyard. Recently, Joe and I chatted by way of a virtual meeting, and I asked him to elaborate on his grandmother’s influence in his life. Joe: “As you may know, my grandmother, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, was a very important person in my life. When I crafted my first wines, naming the brand Belle Glos became the obvious way to pay tribute to her. She was a strong family matriarch, worked hard, was always positive, and loved Pinot Noir. She has always been at the heart of my family, so it only felt right to do something in return to show our appreciation and gratitude towards her. Like the brand itself, Belle Glos Love Letters is an ode to my grandmother and what she embodied; elegance, love, strength, and purity. I am proud that we can still celebrate her legacy eternally with every glass of Belle Glos poured or love letter sent in the mail.” Belle Glos Love Letters is a collaboration with luxury stationer Dempsey & Carroll founded in 1878 in New York City by engraver John Dempsey and businessman George D. Carroll. This limited-edition kit features custom Belle Glos stationery, custom pen, wax, and wax stamper. Hand-engraved steel dies and copper plates made to specification, along with the finest inks and the most luxurious cotton-fiber papers, are used to create this stationery. The stationery kit is a “Limited Edition” available for $90. Joe spoke about his “aha” moment that gave him the idea for this “Love Letters” collaboration. Joe: “Like so many people over these last two years, I went an extended period without seeing the people that I cared for the most, and so I wanted to do something that would show my appreciation for them. I’ve always shared the highs and lows of my day, special occasions, precious moments, great conversations, etc., over a bottle of wine. It only seemed natural to combine these elements, along with my love of letter writing – so, Belle Glos Love Letters was born.” The wax-covered wine bottles are unusual and very captivating. Joe described why he did this. Joe: “A characteristic of Belle Glos has always been the eye-catching, hand-dipped red wax seal which reflects the relevance and distinctive characteristics of each vineyard-designated wine we produce. We first started using our signature burgundy wax dip with the release of the 2002 vintage of Belle Glos. It was our second vintage and our first release of vineyard-designated Pinot Noirs. The initial thought of using wax was to differentiate our higher-end Vineyard Designate Pinots from our entry-level Pinot (sealed with a cork and foil). So, I went out and got a crockpot, a bunch of different colors of wax, and began to blend colors to find the perfect deep burgundy that characterized the elegance and depth of the Pinot inside. Then came the dip— I started shallow and went deeper with each sample until that deep angled dip captured my eye. I recall consulting my father at the time, who I asked a million questions for advice, and he said, “You know, if you go with wax, you’re gonna be stuck having to use it the rest of your life. It becomes part of the brand.” That said, he agreed the deep dip looked amazing, so I went ahead and committed to it. Little did I know it would become such a strong visual component to the package, and yes, my father was right, a part of the brand. The wax dip has helped our bottle be more recognizable and memorable to the people that love fine wine, and for that, I am happy to work with wax for the rest of my life.” With an impressive wine portfolio, Joe explained why he selected these particular wines to “pair” with the stationery he sent to me. Joe: “Belle Glos showcases distinctive Pinot Noirs from California’s most noteworthy coastal wine-growing regions. Each Vineyard Designate is crafted to embrace the purest essence of the locale into elegant expressions of coastal California Pinot Noir. While each vineyard location lies near the Pacific Ocean and might seem very similar at first glance, the climatic differences are significant, varying with the amount of fog, wind, sunlight, and soil type at each site. Due to the varying soil types, if I were to plant the same rootstock and clone at every location, the wines would still vary greatly. So, to take advantage of each vineyard’s character, we matched rootstock, clone, trellis, row orientation, and cultural practices that we thought would bring out the best of each site. I wanted you to experience the Clark & Telephone vineyard and Dairyman vineyard to taste the differences between the locations. There are roughly 300 miles between them, and they sit in very different soils and climate conditions.” Belle Glos Clark & Telephone Pinot Noir 2020 The grapes for this wine are sourced from Clark & Telephone Vineyard located in the Santa Maria Valley of Santa Barbara County, 13 miles from the ocean and situated on a west-facing slope. This vineyard experiences weather patterns that pull from west to east to bring cool fog and coastal breezes inland until August, when Santa Ana winds begin. The climate makes for later-ripening and longer-hanging grapes with fruitiness, great acidity, and underlying flavor nuances that contribute additional complexity. It is aged in 100% French oak, 60% new, for up to nine months. Nose: Ripe fruit with cherry, baking spice, and a hint of floral. Palate: Strawberry, raspberry, and a touch of dark fruit that emerges mid-palate. The finish is a long and sumptuous dessert of cherry, blueberry, vanilla, and a pinch of oak. It is beautifully structured with smooth tannins and lively acidity. Alcohol: 14.9% SRP: $54.99 Pairing: Roasted meat, chicken, seared tuna, casseroles, or cheese and charcuterie. Belle Glos Dairyman Pinot Noir 2020 Once a dairy farm and pastureland, Dairyman Vineyard sits in the southern alluvial plains of the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County near the ocean, a region where the cooling fog comes in through the Petaluma Gap in the morning and once again in the evening. Afternoon breezes help to soften the effects of the warm sun. In Dairyman, each vine is trained on a vertical shoot position (VSP) trellis, limiting growth and opening up the typically congested fruit zone. The combination of low-vigor rootstock and alluvial soil stress the vines, while the cool, coastal climate creates a long growing season that brings about small, concentrated, and flavorful berries. It is aged in 100% French oak, 60% new, for up to nine months. Nose: Cherry, cranberry, rose petals, and spice. Palate: Rich, dark berries flavors with raspberry, cherry, cranberry, anise, and a hint of fig. Spice and vanilla linger on a long finish with silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Alcohol: 14.7% SRP: $54.99 Pairing: Venison, lamb, fowl, stews, fatty fish, or risotto. These wines are rich and elegant, and each bottle is “sealed with a kiss.” So pour yourself a glass and compose a love letter to someone special! Until next time...
Cheers! Penina This article originally appeared in Santé Magazine. To leave a comment or if you have an inquiry, please contact me at wineknittercomments@gmail.com We’ve all either been to or seen photos of breathtaking views of wine vineyards nestled among enchanting settings worthy of a picture postcard. So, what makes Ehret Family Winery’s Bavarian Lion Vineyards so unique? It is not only the location and dazzling views, it is also the magical grapes that grow here, the passion and love the Ehret family pours into protecting the environment, and a dedicated team focused on producing outstanding wines. Knights Valley Bavarian Lion Vineyards is located in Knights Valley, an AVA in one of Northern Sonoma County’s most prestigious viticultural areas. Knights Valley earned its AVA status in 1983 and has approximately 2000 acres of vineyards. The Knights Valley AVA borders the Alexander Valley AVA to the west, Chalk Hill to the south, and Calistoga (in Napa Valley) to the east. Because of its sheltered location, Knights Valley is one of the warmest areas in Sonoma County. Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties thrive in this environment with well-drained soils, abundant sunshine, warm day temperatures, and cool nights. In addition, alluvial gravel soils and volcanic deposits have a direct impact in keeping yields low, which in turn contributes to more concentrated and flavorful grapes. Bavarian Lion Vineyards and Ehret Family Winery The largest estate in Knights Valley is Ehret Family Winery’s 1800-acre Bavarian Lion Vineyards. With a passion and appreciation for fine wine, entrepreneur and German-born Pierre Ehret and his wife Susan purchased 2000 acres of land here in 1978. After selling off 200 acres to a well-known winery in 1995, they were left with 1800 acres of prime land. Not wanting to disturb the biodiversity of this dramatic nature preserve, Pierre and Susan planted wine vineyards on only 1/4 of the property, covering 500 acres in 1996, and established the Bavarian Lion Vineyards. Pierre said, “It is important that the natural environment co-exists with the vineyards, and that the birdlife, wildlife, trees, insects, and fish are allowed to prosper.” Bavarian Lion Vineyards are Certified Sustainable, and they have a certification in Fish Friendly Farming from the California Land Stewardship Institute. A minimalist approach is practiced in the vineyards. All energy is derived from installed solar panels, and only rainwater run-off is recycled and used in the vineyards, eliminating groundwater irrigation. Since 1996, Pierre has been selling his premium grapes to prestigious wineries throughout Sonoma and Napa Valley. But in 2005, he decided to create his own label, Ehret Family Winery and took several of the best premium blocks for his wines. He continues to sell grapes to wineries at an average of 1800 – 2000+ tons per year and keeps 15-20 tons (approximately 1%) for his brand. I asked Pierre what motivated him to create his brand. Pierre: “I received so much positive feedback from all of our customers. I thought it would be a fun family project to make our own wine. Also, several wineries were putting our name on the back of their wine labels as the designated vineyard. And these same wines were getting high scores which I found intriguing.” In 2006 Ehret Family Winery produced their first vintage of Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon. After harvest, grapes are transported to a custom crush facility where Erin Green, the consultant winemaker, supervises and spins her magic, producing an amazing portfolio of wines for Ehret Family Winery. Erin has been with Ehret starting with the 2015 vintage. She is no stranger to winemaking and has an impressive background dating back to the 1990s. Erin said that she prefers consulting rather than running a winery. “I like the process from farming to production.” When Erin first arrived at Bavarian Lion Vineyards, she searched among the blocks to find the hidden jewels. Her goal was to try and raise the quality of the wine. “My first year, I worked with nine different blocks and was able to grow Cabernet Sauvignon as a very small berry and cluster. The berries were very dark, rich, dense, and concentrated. I like lighter crop levels to obtain more intense flavor and accumulate enough sugar and maturity in the grapes.” In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, the vineyards are planted to Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel. I asked Erin if climate change has had an impact on the vineyards. Erin: “It can get warm, and we’ve had some drought years, but we have three very large trap water reservoirs to help us. Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is tougher and can deal with the change.” Pierre added, “Knights Valley is known for its temperate and special climate. It is the fires that are our biggest issue, more so than climate change. The smoke from the fires can sit in the vineyards and contaminate the vines and grapes.” Bavarian Lion Vineyards has approximately 79 blocks ranging from 400-800 feet in elevation. All of Ehret’s Cabs are a blend of selected blocks, and the Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are produced from single blocks. Since 2015, Ehret Family Wines has been winning awards, and their wines receive high ratings every year. Here are three gems from their portfolio. Sauvignon Blanc 2020 This 100% Sauvignon Blanc was aged in stainless steel tanks. Erin said, “The painstaking effort with which we crafted this singular expression of Knights Valley Sauvignon Blanc was worth every last second of the month-long ferment. Utilizing an extremely low-temperature tactic allowed us to enhance and concentrate the fruit expression this grape variety is so famous for.“ Nose: Citrus zest, white stone fruit, minerality, and a dash of floral Palate: Fresh and vibrant acidity with peach, grapefruit, melon, and minerality blended in. Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $35 Production: 440 cases Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 This wine is a blend of 75.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16.61% Cabernet Franc and 8.17% Petite Verdot. The wine was aged for 18 months in 52% new French oak barrels. Nose: Ripe berries, cherry, baking spice, and violet Palate: Silky tannins, dark ripe fruit, black cherry, pomegranate, dark raspberry, toasted oak, and cocoa, ending with a rich and persistent finish. Alcohol: 15% SRP: $75 Production: 505 cases Hillside Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine aged for 18 months in 78% new French oak barrels. Nose: Violet, dark cherry, and blackberry Palate: Rich and concentrated dark fruit with blackberry, blueberry, dark cherry, herbs, and dark chocolate. Oak and mineral notes dance around the palate with soft tannins and a long finish. Alcohol: 15.5% SRP: $115 Production: 202 cases Concerning the 2021 vintage, this is what Erin had to say. “The 2021 vintage was challenging because of low yields and limited water. It was 20% to 30% down in quantity. However, it is a small but powerful vintage with very tiny and flavorful berries…it is liquid gold! Nature gave us the crops, and we didn’t have to under-crop to attain low yields. It’s what the vines wanted to do this year, and we benefited.” I certainly look forward to tasting the 2021 vintage! So, where can one find Ehret wines? With a small production output each year, these hand-crafted wines are mainly sold online. Ehret Family Winery believes in “quality over quantity” and “passion versus mass production.” They have created an online Wine Club where members receive exclusive access, assurance of obtaining new releases, and special pricing opportunities. At present, there are about 150 members. However, one doesn’t have to be a member to order wine! Also, if you should find yourself in downtown Healdsburg, head over to the Ehret Tasting Room that they opened a few months ago. You won’t be disappointed! And, if you feel adventurous and would like a customized and personal tour of Bavarian Lion Vineyards, in addition to a wine tasting, they are taking reservations. As Pierre said, “Experience how the natural environment co-exists with the vineyards.” Pierre and Susan have three children, Alex, Christian, and Isabella, born in Santa Rosa, CA. The family likes to divide their time between Sonoma and Europe, instilling in their children a solid European heritage and appreciation for culture, both in the States and abroad. I have tasted many of the Ehret Family Winery wines in the past few weeks. They are elegant, expressive, and memorable. My palate is still singing!
Until next time… Cheers! Penny This article was originally published on Santé Magazine To leave a comment or if you have an inquiry, please contact me at wineknittercomments@gmail.com “Mendocino is unique, rugged and refined, a place that draws passionate people. I’m pleased to be a part of that passion at Saracina.” -Alex MacGregor, Lead Winemaker Located in northern California, Mendocino County AVA (American Viticultural Areas) is one of the most northern wine regions in the state and is north of Sonoma. There are ten diverse appellations with two distinct climate zones divided by the Mendocino Range. Mendocino tends to be defined as “coastal or inland,” and the ocean’s cooling effects vary on the vineyards. My focus today is on Hopland, an area in the southern part of the county and about 30 miles north of Healdsburg. Saracina Vineyards is a 250-acre family-owned ranch situated in Hopland along the Upper Russian River. Saracina is a Certified California Sustainable (CSWA) winery and vineyards with 140-year-old olive trees, vegetable gardens, and beehives. Forty acres are devoted to wine vineyards with six distinct parcels and diverse soils including rocky, black clay and gravelly loam. The climate is composed of wet winters and dry summers, with a substantial diurnal shift from warm days to cool nights. Saracina was founded in 2001 by a well-known husband and wife team in the wine industry, John Fetzer and Patty Rock. They named the estate ‘Saracina’ after a centuries-old farmhouse and vineyards in Tuscany where John and Patty spent their honeymoon. They brought winemaker Alex MacGregor on board in 2002. Alex, who brings a wealth of knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion to winemaking, has left no stone unturned when it comes to “pushing the limits.” He loves working with old vines, using native yeast fermentations, hands-off elevage (Elevage by definition is the process of nurturing the wine from fermentation to barrel to bottling.), and unfiltered bottling. Saracina’s handcrafted, limited production is testimony to the quality of their wine and respect and dedication for the land. In 2018 Marc Taub, the third generation of the Taub family and owners of Palm Bay International, a leading wine importer, became proprietor of Saracina Vineyards. Marc continues to maintain the values and quality of Saracina that began with John and Patty. Several months ago, I had the opportunity to taste five Saracina wines with Alex MacGregor at a Zoom wine tasting event. Saracina Sauvignon Blanc 2019 This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from two vineyard sites, Lolonis and Chevalier vineyards. The Lolonis vineyard has some of the oldest Sauvignon Blanc vines in the country, planted in 1942. The grapes were hand-harvested and barrel fermented in neutral French oak with native yeast. The nose offers beautiful aromas of melon, citrus, and white stone fruit. It is well structured with floral, grapefruit, white peach, minerality, and vibrant acidity on the palate. Alcohol: 13.2% SRP: $23 Saracina Unoaked Chardonnay 2019 This wine is 100% Chardonnay. Grapes are sourced entirely from 40-year-old vines at the Saracina ranch in soils influenced by the Russian River. It was cool tank-fermented with four months on lees. The wine has lovely aromas of white stone fruit, pear, citrus, and apple. The palate offers pear, sweet apple, and crisp lemon with nice acidity and a good, clean texture. Alcohol: 13.2% SRP: $23 Saracina “Skid Row” Malbec 2018 The grapes for this 100% Malbec were planted in 1999 in Skid Row Vineyard in the westernmost block on the Saracina ranch. The plant material is the original Bordeaux clone 4 and is the lowest-yielding commercial Malbec available, producing concentrated fruit. This wine is aged in thin-stave French oak barrels (15% new wood) for 19 months. “The vineyard was named “Skid Row” for the tracks carved into the surrounding hillsides in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by donkeys dragging logs down to the vineyard site, where they were collected to fire the furnaces for hop barns in the course of making beer.” Alluring aromas of dark berries, dark cherry, plum, and a hint of spice set the stage for this delicious wine. The palate offers lush berries with a dark jammy feel, baking spice, silky tannins, and a lengthy finish. Alcohol: 14.2% SRP: $30 Saracina “Old Soul” Red 2018 “Old Soul Red by Saracina is a nod to Mendocino County’s adventurous history of exploration and discovery.” This wine is a blend of 43% Zinfandel, 31% Malbec and 26% Petite Sirah. The Zinfandel is sourced from two vineyards sites, the Chapman vineyard in Redwood Valley and the Sawyer vineyard that sits at 1000’ feet elevation. The Malbec is sourced from the Saracina estate, and the Petite Syrah comes from the Saracina estate’s steep hillside and the Niemi vineyard with 20-year-old vines. The wine was aged in 10% new thin-stave French oak and four-year seasoned American oak for 18 months, Aromas of cherry, berries, and spice segue onto the palate with additional notes of rich ripe fruit, plum, and a hint of oak. Soft tannins balance nicely with acidity, and the finish is long and lush. Alex remarked, “This is a sophisticated and ‘more rustic’ peasant wine. The blend changes every year.” Alcohol: 14.7% SRP: $25 Saracina “Winter’s Edge” 2018 This red blend is 50% Garnache, and 50% field blend (Grenache, Carignane, French Colombard). “This unique old vine field blend is vinified from grapes picked from two single vineyard sites on November 6th, 2018 (post frost). From the Casa Verde vineyard, planted in 1944, we harvested a field blend of old vine Carignane, Grenache, and French Colombard. Casa Verde is dry-farmed and certified organic with 75-year-old, head-pruned vines planted on alluvial loam soils. This incredibly unique fruit is complemented by a percentage of Grenache from the Niemi Vineyard, where red soils with volcanic influence yield grapes with a plush and jammy character that adds weight, texture, and ripeness to the final blend.”- Saracina vintage notes. The free-run, drained juice underwent native malolactic fermentation that took 12 months to complete. The wine was then aged for 19 months in older Francois Freres barrels. This is a vibrant, bold, and juicy wine with aromas of rose, ripe red fruit, and baking spice. The palate is layered with sour cherry, pomegranate, raspberry, and a touch of pepper. Mild tannins, brilliant acidity, or, as Alex says, “crunchy acidity” lead to a long finish to savor it all!
Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $30 The white wines are perfect for aperitifs or pair with oysters, seafood, or spicy Asian cuisine. Enjoy the reds with a charcuterie plate, grilled meat, fowl, or hearty stews. Enjoy these expressive wines all year long. I guarantee that you will taste the passion and dedication in every sip! Until next time… Cheers! Penina To leave a comment or if you have an inquiry, please contact me at wineknittercomments@gmail.com It is the dog days of August, and there is no escape from the heat and humidity for some. Hydrating with lots of water is essential, but come “cocktail hour,” one might want to end the day with something more “flavorful.” My pick for this week is three light and refreshing wines from Scheid Family Wines. Scheid Family Wines, founded in 1972, is located in Monterey AVA of California’s central coast. It began as a grape-growing company, selling 100% of its production to other wineries. Today this family-run and owned winery produce and bottle their own wine from estate vineyards that stretch along a 70-mile spread of the Salinas Valley. Their portfolio includes seven brands. From the very beginning, the family was environmentally conscious, which is reflected in their vineyards and winemaking practices. “From our start in 1972, we’ve held firm to the belief that growing the highest quality wine grapes and crafting the best wines possible can only be achieved through taking care of the land and our people. The best wines come from healthy vines.” Scheid Family With 12 certified sustainable estate-grown vineyards in Monterey, the Scheid Family champions low-impact farming methods. This includes composting 100% of the winery’s grape pomace, stems, and seeds in the vineyards and recycling 100% of the winery wastewater. Their state-of-the-art winery is also certified sustainable and powered by 100% renewable wind energy. In addition, Scheid Family Wines is organically farming 1500 acres of their estate vineyards with the objective of establishing 100% organic farming methods in all of their estate vineyards by 2025. Here are three wines representing three brands from their portfolio. Ryder Estate Pinot Noir Rosé 2020
Pinot Noir grapes are sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards on the central coast. This wine begins with tantalizing aromas of berry, cherry, floral, and a hint of earthiness. The palate is fruit-forward and lush with strawberry, cherry, and a touch of rose petals on the finish. It is crisp and refreshing with bright acidity. Alcohol: 13% SRP: $15 District 7 Chardonnay 2019 The Chardonnay grapes for this wine are sourced from District 7 sustainable estate vineyards in the cooler wine-growing regions of Monterey. 25% of the wine was aged in new French oak for 14 months and 75% in stainless steel tanks. Lovely aromas of citrus, pear, stone fruit, and vanilla segue onto the palate with tropical notes and sweet apples. A nice finish of citrus, vanilla, and cream lingers on the palate. This wine is crisp, balanced, and very refreshing. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $18 Scheid Vineyards Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2020 This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from five estate vineyards in the Monterey appellation, including Scheid. The wine is aged for four months in stainless steel tanks. Citrus, white stone fruit, and a hint of exotic fruit aromas lead to a palate of fresh fruit that includes subtle herbal notes and a touch of minerality. Crisp acidity and a dab of lemon zest on the finish will certainly please the palate. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $22 Drink these wines as an aperitif or pair with appetizers, seafood, salads, roasted chicken, or light pasta dishes. Enjoy and stay cool! Cheers! Mon Frère Winery Mon Frère means ‘my brother’ in French, and the Mon Frère Winery dedicates their three wines to special and rare friends who feel like family. Located in Napa, CA, the winery is a partnership between legendary winemaker, Tom Hinde and family-owned wine and spirits organization Palm Bay International. Tom Hinde, head winemaker, brings his 30+ years of knowledge and talent for California wines to the table. The winery sources the best quality grapes throughout California’s wine regions, selecting different clones of the same grape. For their Chardonnay, grapes are chosen and blended from the coastal region’s Lodi, Mendocino and Monterey vineyards. Pinot Noir is a blend of grapes from the Sonoma Coast, Santa Rita Hills, and the highlands of Santa Barbara and Santa Lucia. Mon Frère wanted to focus on making the Cabernet Sauvignon as versatile as possible. Grapes are sourced from vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino (coast) and blended with grapes from vineyards in Lodi and Paso Robles. I received a sample of the Cabernet Sauvignon, and now I can't wait to try their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay! Mon Frère Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 As stated above, the grapes are sourced from different vineyards and locations. The climate is a mixture of warmer Mediterranean areas and cooler coastal areas giving this wine a nice balance between structure, freshness, and fruit. Grapes are pressed and undergo fermentation separately. After they are blended, the wine ages in a mix of French oak (90%) and American oak (10% new). This wine is a beautiful and inviting garnet color. Juicy aromas of dark cherry, dark berries, baking spice, and toasty notes segue onto the palate. Rich, ripe fruit with plum, spice, and oak notes dance on the palate. Silky tannins contribute to the fine structure and expression of this wine. Pair with grilled meat, seared tuna, hearty pasta, and stews.
Alcohol: 13.9% SRP: $16.99 I will end this story with a quote from the back of the wine bottle. “At Mon Frère, French for “My Brother”, we think it’s important to hit the pause button occasionally to appreciate the cast of characters who brush you off, build you up and remind you to laugh! So whether you roll with rogues or saints, take a moment and raise a glass of Cabernet with the friends that make life’s crazy journey all worthwhile.” I’ll drink to that! Until next time… Cheers! Penina To leave a comment or if you have an inquiry, please contact me at wineknittercomments@gmail.com My virtual plane recently flew me to the picturesque wine-growing region of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, CA. The Russian River Valley was granted AVA status (American Viticultural Area) in 1983 and is considered a premier region for cultivating cool- climate grapes. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel are the most planted vines here. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc follow. Within the valley, many established vineyards produce distinctively different wines from each other. Gary Farrell Winery is located in the heart of the Russian River Valley. It was while working with Russian River Valley vintners in the mid-1970s that winemaker Gary Farrell developed a reputation for producing elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. In 1982 and under his own label, Gary produced his first Pinot Noir from grapes grown in the iconic Rochioli Vineyard and the adjacent Allen Vineyard. Gary and his winery became renowned for producing small-lot Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in the Russian River Valley. He identified and secured grapes from only the best sites in this AVA. Gary built the winery in 2000, with a focus on his obsession for cleanliness, attention to detail, natural process flow, small tank fermentation, and top-flight French oak cooperage. Gary sold the winery in 2004, but to this day his legacy continues with collaborative partnerships with top growers and dedication to making wines that capture the essence and unique character of each distinctive vineyard. In 2012, winemaker Theresa Heredia joined Gary Farrell Winery. Her specialty is small-lot, single vineyard wines. Theresa said, “Coming to Gary Farrell was ideal for me with 36 different vineyards to work with. My primary goal is respect for the fruit and the vineyards.” She further stated, "I strongly believe in the Russian River Valley's capacity to consistently produce world-class wines. The key is cool breezes and fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean blanket." The Russian River Valley boasts a long, consistent growing season, allowing for a slow ripening process and good levels of acidity. In addition to the fog and cool breezes that relieve the summer heat, the 35-40 degree drop in temperature at night also contributes to the long growing season. Volcanic, sandstone and alluvial soils add to the aromas, vibrancy, intense flavor, and balance of the wines. With wine samples poured, Theresa walked us through a tasting of three Chardonnays and four Pinot Noirs representing seven different single vineyards. It was a stellar lineup of the 2017 vintage. Every wine shows the uniqueness and expression of their respective vineyards. Theresa said, “Vintage and site designation is the most important in making quality wine. We use gentle pressing and the use of light to medium toasted French oak barrels for all of our wines, allowing the fruit to shine through.” Theresa uses gentle, whole-cluster pressing, which produces a much finer and less bitter wine. Chardonnays Olivet Lane Vineyard Chardonnay This vineyard is exposed to regular fog, and is moderated by cool breezes, crisp nights, and well-drained loam, clay soils that create a perfect environment for this well-balanced Chardonnay with rich acidity and minerality. Fermentation and aging took place in 35% new French oak for nine months on its primary lees. Lovely aromas of pear, lemon, melon, and honeysuckle spill onto the palate. Vibrant acidity, hints of baking spice, lemon curd, and toasty notes add to the dimension of this wine, with honeysuckle lingering on the finish. Alcohol: 13.8% SRP: $45 Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay The legendary Ritchie Vineyard sits on a northwest-facing hillside in the heart of the Russian River Valley and is regarded as one of the best Chardonnay sites in all of California. The soil profile is comprised of *Goldridge series sandy loam and volcanic ash deposits, which contributes to the wine’s intensity and expressive characteristics. Fermentation and aging took place in 35% new French oak for nine months on its primary lees. * ”The predominant soil type of the AVA is called Goldridge—a fine sandy loam covering about 60% of the area. The soil has a dark, yellowish, fine, sandy loam surface over a subsoil of golden yellow, sandy loam and fractured sandstone. It is derived from the remains of an ancient inland sea that slowly emptied into the Pacific three to five million years ago. It is particularly valuable for high-quality wine grape production because of its excellent drainage and low soil fertility. These characteristics allow it to be initially managed from a “low vigor” situation that may be readily customized with more water and/or nutrition, which directly contributes to wine quality”. Source: Paul Anamosa, Ph.D., Soil Science & Viticulture This is a vibrant and refreshing wine with aromas of citrus, tropical notes, and floral. The palate offers fruit-driven flavors of white stone fruit, lemon, pink grapefruit, nutty notes, and bright acidity. It has so much depth and character. Alcohol: 14.3% SRP: $60 Rochioli Vineyard Chardonnay The Rochioli Vineyard is a historic site that grows both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Fertile, gravely soils and warmer daytime temperatures in this vineyard contribute to the wine’s flavor and complexity. Fermentation and aging took place in 35% new French oak for nine months on its primary lees. Compared to the other Chardonnays that I tasted, this one has more citrus, fewer tropical notes, and more minerality. The palate is treated to juicy white stone fruit, lemon, white flowers, and toasted nuts. Crisp acidity and hints of baking spice add dimension to this beautifully textured wine. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $65 Pinot Noirs Bacigalupi Vineyard Pinot Noir
In 1964, the Bacigalupi family was among the first to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the area. In fact, their Chardonnay grapes became famous when they were used to make Chateau Montelena’s 1973 winning entry in the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976. The soil in this vineyard is gravelly sandy loam. Its unique climate features cool mornings and warm afternoons. This wine was aged for 15 months in 40% new French oak. Inviting aromas of cherry, red berries, and spice are mouth-watering. Ripe, juicy fruit greets the palate with dark cherry, raspberry, herbal notes, and a touch of tobacco. Beautifully balanced, soft, and quite engaging. Alcohol: 14.1% SRP: $65 Hallberg Vineyard Pinot Noir This vineyard is located in the Green Valley sub-appellation. The marine influence brings invigorating daytime breezes, followed by cool evening temperatures. The blend for this Pinot is a composition of many of the best blocks here, which produces fruit with deep, dark color and great structure. This wine was aged for 15 months in 40% new French oak. It has intoxicating aromas of floral, dark cherry, blackberry, and ripe strawberries. The palate is layered with earthy notes, dark cherry, spice, raspberry, and a hint of vanilla. This is a fresh and intense wine with soft tannins and a long finish. Alcohol: 13.8% SRP: $55 McDonald Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir This vineyard is close to the border that divides the Russian River Valley from the Petaluma Gap. This is where the fog first arrives inland from the Pacific Ocean in the morning and where it burns off last in the afternoon. The vines are planted in one to four feet of Goldridge sandy loam underlain with clay. The climate and soil produce small, but flavor-packed clusters and berries that have lots of natural acidity. This wine was aged for 15 months in 40% new French oak. Seductive aromas and flavors abound in this complex yet light wine. Pomegranate, cranberry, strawberry, and earth fuse with hints of anise, pepper, cherry, and baking spice. Fruit and acidity meld together in this elegant and expressive wine. Alcohol: 13.3% SRP: $70 Martaella Vineyard Pinot Noir This vineyard is located in an area called Laguna de Santa Rosa, which is in the heart of the Russian River Valley. The climate is influenced by the fog that rolls in from the Pacific Ocean. It can cool the region down by as much as 40 degrees. High vine density planting exists here, much like that of Burgundy and the result is smaller berries and smaller clusters, which produce overall concentration and balance. This wine was aged for 15 months in 40% new French oak. Wonderful aromas of cherry, dark raspberry, blueberry, floral and herbal notes segue onto the palate. The wine is a dance of savory and sweet with firm tannins and good acidity. This is a beautifully structured Pinot Noir with deep fruit concentration. Theresa recommends decanting this wine. Alcohol: 13.2% SRP: $65 If you love Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, then you must indulge yourself in these wines. The grapes may be sourced from different vineyards, but the wines all share one thing in common, the purity of the fruit and simple elegance. Until next time… Cheers! Penina To leave a comment or if you have an inquiry, please contact me at wineknittercomments@gmail.com When last I wrote, my wine glass and I were enjoying wines from the Russian River Valley, California. However, before I leave this golden state, I have two more wines to taste. The Federalist is a wine brand created by wine producer Terlato Wines that was launched in 2010. It features a range of wines sourced from several AVAs such as Lodi, Sonoma County and North Coast. All the wines are cellared and bottled by Federalist Vineyards. The Federalist pays homage to the Founding Fathers, Statue of Liberty and the American Bald Eagle with etched portraits on each bottle. “Born from the virtues of every forward-thinking, hard-working, red-blooded American, this is The Federalist. This Is American Craft Wine.” I received two samples from the The Federalist portfolio. Chardonnay 2018 This 100% Chardonnay is sourced from vineyards in Mendocino County. It is the only white wine The Federalist produces. The wine is aged in 35% new American and Hungarian oak, with a touch of French. The Hungarian oak contributes to the wine’s spicy character and the American oak rounds it out with a sweeter finish. This wine opens with enticing aromas of citrus, floral, apple and baking spice. The palate is layered with juicy pear, apple, sweet spice and a hint of cinnamon. It is rich and creamy with a surprisingly long finish. Serve as an aperitif or with light fare. Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $23 Bourbon Barrel-Aged Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from vineyards in Lodi. The wine was aged for six months in American oak and then another six months in charred bourbon barrels. Lots of fresh red fruit aromas mix with smoke and spice. The palate offers juicy fruit, raspberry, cherry, smoke, spice and vanilla. This is a well-balanced wine with smooth tannins and just the right amount of acidity. Serve with grilled meat, summer salads, veggies and spicy cuisine.
Alcohol: 14% SRP: $21.99 Stay tuned for more adventures of the traveling wine glass! Until next time… Cheers! Penina To leave a comment or if you have an inquiry, please contact me at wineknittercomments@gmail.com Many of us are dreaming of places we’d like to travel to but can’t right now so instead, we are navigating through websites, movies, books and food to vicariously enjoy an otherwise unattainable and hopefully, short-lived situation. I have been traveling far and wide exploring wine regions around the world, one glass at a time. Today my wine glass and I are off to sunny California to taste Ron Rubin wines. Ron Rubin Ron Rubin is no stranger to wine. Having grown up in the wine/spirit wholesale business that his father started in 1950 in Illinois, Ron decided to pursue a degree in viticulture and enology at UC Davis in the early 70s. Bitten by the bug of California wines, Ron started adding wines to the company portfolio. Ron recalled, “The salesmen could not understand how to sell these wines. What I learned early on was that I needed to take our team to California, visit the wineries, learn, and then come back to sell the wines. It worked.” It wasn’t until late 2011, that Ron fulfilled a 40-year dream and purchased River Road Family Vineyards and Winery in the Green Valley AVA, a subzone of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. The winery sits in the mid-slope “sweet spot” of the Green Valley. Green Valley – Russian River AVA Although Green Valley is one of the smallest appellations in Sonoma, it is the most consistent of any North Coast appellation in terms of soil, climate and flavor. Its trademark is the fog and Goldbridge soil. The fog that originates at the Petaluma Wind Gap in the coastal mountains defines Green Valley. Due to Green Valley’s proximity to the gap, this is the first place that the fog rolls in and the last place to burn off. Because of this, Green Valley encounters cooler morning temperatures for a longer period, more so than the northern parts of the Russian River. Temperature shifts are subtler here and the cool marine climate, cooler daytime readings and long growing season allow the grapes to slowly develop character and flavor as well as retain acidity and balance of sugars. This, in turn, adds to the complexity, aromas, lower alcohol and freshness of the wines. Goldridge soil is the most predominant type of soil here. It is 60% sand, 10% clay and 30% silt particles that are the remains from an ancient inland sea dating back three to five million years ago. The soil consists of a top layer of fine sandy loam that covers a subsoil of sandy loam and fractured sandstone. The soil provides good drainage and excellent, natural chemical balance. This is a perfect growing environment for cool-climate grapes such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. River Road Vineyards/Ron Rubin Winery The winery has nine acres of vineyards of which 6.5 acres are devoted to growing Pinot Noir and 2.5 acres are for growing Chardonnay. Ron also buys fruit from a carefully chosen handful of growers, three of whom have been selling fruit to the winery for decades. The winery is both SIP (Sustainability in Practice) Certified and Certified Sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. With his head winemaker, Joe Freeman, Ron produces two well-defined brands, Ron Rubin Wines and the River Road collection. I received seven bottles of wine representing both brands. River Road Collection Most of the wines in this portfolio are priced from $14-$20, with the exception of a Pinot Noir priced at $30. The portfolio includes an extensive range of wines established by the winery’s former owners. Ron believes that good wine should be accessible, “exceptional wines at a great value.” A signature of this collection is its easy drinking style. Ron says, “I’m a fan of low alcohol wines. I keep the alcohol in check to produce elegant wines that you can enjoy, glass after glass.” Un-Oaked Chardonnay 2019 Chardonnay grapes are sourced from both estate-owned and family-owned vineyards. This is a fresh, light wine with nice aromas of citrus and hints of honeysuckle. A palate of green apple, grapefruit, pear and crisp acidity makes this quite refreshing. Alcohol: 12.5% SRP: $14 Reserve Chardonnay 2018 Chardonnay grapes for this wine are sourced from the Russian River Valley. The wine is aged in both oak barrel and stainless steel tanks. Floral, pear and vanilla aromas segue onto the palate with hints of citrus, apple, peach and lemon zest on the finish. Bright acidity and a creamy mouthfeel blend well together. Alcohol: 13.7% SRP: $18 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are sourced from the Alexander Valley. This wine is aged for nine months in French and American oak barrels. A juicy bouquet of berries, plum and baking spice continue onto the palate with blackberry, strawberry, dark cherry and toasted oak. Fresh acidity rounds out the palate with a smooth and pleasant mouthfeel. Alcohol: 13.9% SRP: $25 Pinot Noir Stephanie’s Cuvée 2017 Pinot Noir grapes are sourced from Green Valley and the wine is aged in 20% new French oak barrels. This wine opens with a bouquet of ripe red fruit, floral, baking spice and a touch of blueberry and raspberry. The palate offers lush blackberry, raspberry, spice, cocoa and a dollop of dark cherry and vanilla on the finish. It is a smooth blend of fresh acidity and tannins. Alcohol: 14.3% SRP: $30 Ron Rubin Collection These wines are mostly made with Russian River fruit made from blends of different estates that add complexity and consistency from year to year. Winemaker Joe Freeman says, “Differences in terroir are more important with Pinot Noir. For Chardonnay, it’s the clones that have more impact.” The wines carry a price tag of $14-$25. Pam’s UN-Oaked Chardonnay 2018 When Ron Rubin bought the winery, his wife Pam asked him to please make an un-oaked version of her favorite white grape, Chardonnay. Ron and Joe Freeman set to work and one year later, Pam’s UN-Oaked Chardonnay made its debut. The grapes for this wine were sourced from Clarksburg, Lodi and Mendocino County. This is a fresh fruit, off-dry wine with plenty of juiciness and moderately low-alcohol. Citrus, lots of pear, sweet apples and nectarine envelop the palate. It is balanced with just the right blend of alcohol, acidity and sugar. And yes, there is the slightest hint of effervescence Alcohol: 12.5% SRP: $14 Ron Rubin Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2018 Grapes were sourced and handpicked from an intricate blend of clones in the winery’s favorite vineyards. The grapes were barrel fermented with a mix of French and American oak. After fermentation, the wine was aged for over six months in oak barrels with another six months or so in the bottle. Pear, tart apples and baking spice greet the nose with an abundance of juicy pear, apples, honeydew and hints of minerality that entertain the palate. A creamy texture with a balance of bright acidity adds to the structure of this wine. Alcohol: 13.7% SRP: $20 Ron Rubin Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2017 This wine is made mostly from Green Valley grapes grown on the estate with some grapes acquired from a few local, family vineyards. The wine was aged in new French oak barrels. Aromas of ripe red fruit, sweet spice, cherry, berries and a hint of herbs lead to a palate of sour cherry, cranberry, ripe red fruit, vanilla and a touch of earth. Soft tannins and crisp acidity round out this fruit-driven wine.
Alcohol: 13.7% SRP: $25 All of these wines are light, food-friendly and price approachable and they are fun to drink. Pour a little California sunshine in your wine glass! Until next time… Cheers!
