If you are looking to dazzle your palate, celebrate a special occasion, or seek something beyond the usual wine gift this holiday season, consider these wines. And yes, they are pricey. However, if it is within your budget, these wines are worth exploring and will surely impress the discerning palate. Château d’Esclans Garrus 2020 This luxury cuvée is made in the heart of Provence, France, and it is considered Château d’Esclans’ finest wine. The estate refers to it as “the essence of 100-year-old vines.” It is a blend of Grenache, Vermentino and Syrah. The grapes are sourced from a single vineyard of 100-year-old vines, with fermentation and aging taking place in large French oak barrels. Nose: Beautiful notes of floral, peach, berries, and spice. Palate: Lush, ripe red berries, white stone fruit, vibrant acidity, and a hint of minerality. The finish is long, with baking spice, vanilla, and a touch of citrus lingering. Magnifique! Alcohol: 14% SRP: $110 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy as an aperitif or serve with appetizers, seafood, grilled chicken, Ceviche, goat cheese salad, creamy pasta, or grilled vegetables. Famiglia Pasqua Mai Dire Mai Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2012 Pasqua Vigneti é Cantine, established in 1925, is located in Verona, Italy. In 2019, I met with third-generation Ricardo and Alessandro Pasqua for an informative and delightful lunch and wine tasting. Included in the tasting was the 2011 Famiglia Pasqua Mai Dire Mai Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, an unforgettable experience! So, I was very excited when I recently received the 2012 vintage! This wine is a blend of 65% Corvina, 15% Corvinone, 10% Rondinella, and 10% Oseleta. The grapes are hand-harvested and dried in crates for four months. Aging occurs in new French oak casks (70% barrels of 225 liters and 30% 500 liters) for 24 months. Nose: Heady aromas of plum, dark cherry, earth, spice, oak, and cocoa beans. Palate: Aromas segue onto the palate of this complex and opulent wine. Dark fruit merges with baking spice and dark chocolate for a rich, silky, well-balanced wine. The finish is long and elegant. Alcohol: 16.5% SRP: $113 Pairing suggestions: Aged cheese, grilled meat, stews, risotto, and dark chocolate desserts. To learn more about Pasqua, click on the menu at right. (Please note some stats and info have changed since the 2019 article was published.) M by Michael Mondavi Napa Valley Red Blend 2018 The new label on this bottle is a “stop-in-your-tracks” stunner. And what is inside is superb! This wine is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot sourced from a select block within volcanic hillside vineyards sitting on top of Atlas Peak. The vineyards for M by Michael Mondavi Family are sustainably farmed with a focus on biodiversity, allowing each vineyard block’s unique attributes to shine through. Michael’s son, head winemaker Rob Mondavi, Jr, crafts M by Michael Mondavi to “express the balance personified by the great Bordeaux houses, while embracing the rich opulence and plushness of Napa Valley.” Winemaker Sabrina Massola brings her expertise to the blend, inspired by Michael’s palate and guidance. The wine is aged in 60% new French oak for 20 months. Nose: Floral, dark berries, blueberries, plum, baking spice, and herbs set the stage for this rich wine.
Palate: Dark cherry, juicy plum, berries, a touch of violet, and a hint of forest floor, with complexity and fine tannins. The finish goes on forever. This is a seductive and luxuriant wine. Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $200 Pairing suggestions: Roasted meats and stews, mushroom risotto, hearty soups, seared tuna, or roasted duck. One doesn’t need to deplete their bank account to enjoy a bottle of wine. There are many excellent wines for under $30. They were impressive wines with a lot of character at a very friendly price! So, I was delighted to receive new vintage releases of these memorable wines. For those of you who may have missed my story on Hess wines, here is a quick recap. Donald Hess is the founder of Hess Wines, a family-owned, fifth-generation company in Napa Valley, CA. In the 1970s, Donald made a business trip to Napa Valley and it was during this visit that he took an interest in mountain winegrowing. He learned that the Mount Veeder mountain vineyards were an ideal area for growing grapes, which produce unique character and flavor due to the microclimate and soils. In 1978 Donald made his first land purchase on Mount Veeder, a property in which winemaking and farming go back as far as 1876. This property is now the site of the Hess Collection Winery. By 1982, Donald had acquired 900 acres and in 1986 he opened the Hess Collection Winery to the public. Dave Guffy became Director of Winemaking in 1999 and Donald formally retired in 2011, passing on the baton to son-in-law Timothy Persson as CEO and daughter Sabrina, the fifth generation of the Hess family. Hess Wines focuses on sustainable farming practices and state of the art winemaking. In addition to its mountain vineyards, Hess Wines has estate vineyards in areas such as Pope Valley and near the Carneros region of the Napa Valley. They also produce wine in Argentina and South Africa. Hess Select Central Coast Pinot Noir 2018 The grapes for this 100% Pinot Noir are harvested from the Sarmento Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands region of the Central Coast. Sarmento Vineyard is located on the benchlands of the Gabilan Mountains in Monterey, where the Pacific breezes cross the range each afternoon to cool the vineyards, resulting in extended ripening over a long, moderate growing season. (Benchland is a thin stretch of level ground at the foot of slopes or mountains.) Aging of this wine took place in French oak for up to 12 months. It opens with alluring aromas of berries, cherry, spice and vanilla. The palate offers lush layers of dark cherry, dark plum, raspberry and a lingering hint of baking spice and cherry. A beautiful marriage of silky tannins and acidity complete this irresistible Pinot Noir. Pair with grilled meat, fish, light pasta and appetizers. Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $19 Hess Select North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 This is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petite Sirah, 7% Malbec, 5% Merlot and 1% Syrah. The grapes are harvested from the North Coast, which is known for its mild Mediterranean climate and well-drained volcanic and gravelly soils. These prime vineyard sites produce flavorful fruit with layers of natural acidity and balanced tannins. This wine is aged in 27% new French and American oak for 18 months. It has succulent aromas of dark berries, cherry, spice and earth. Mouthwatering flavors of rich dark fruit highlighted by plum and blackberry blend with spice, vanilla, clove and cocoa that linger on the palate. Pair this wine with grilled meat, BBQ fare, hearty fish, pasta and pizza. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $19 Both wines are perfect for year-round pouring and will pair beautifully with a myriad of cuisine!

Hess Collection Napa Valley Chardonnay 2017 is 100% Chardonnay. The grapes are sourced from Súskol Estate Vineyards located in one of the coolest growing regions within Napa. It is the site of an ancient seabed with shallow, sandy soils. Chardonnay is exclusively grown on this 175-acre vineyard with nine unique clones to work with. 70% of the blend goes through stainless fermentation and the remaining 30% sees a light touch of oak-aged for nine months in French oak, 19% new. Luscious aromas of floral, pear, honeydew and vanilla lead to a rich and creamy palate. Layers of melon, honeysuckle, pear and baking spice with hints of stone fruit are complemented by lively acidity and balance. Enjoy as an aperitif or serve with seafood, light pasta or cheese. Alcohol: 14.4% SRP: $22 Hess Collection “Allomi” Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petite Sirah, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec and 2% Merlot. Grapes are harvested from Allomi Vineyard located in northeastern Pope Valley, a part of Napa Valley. Vines are exposed to a long, warm growing season and well-drained clay loam soils. There are 35 unique blocks with six different Cabernet clones in this 210-acre estate. Each block is evaluated and only the finest components are selected for each vintage. This wine is aged in 27% new American oak for 18 months. A profusion of black fruit and spice with hints of floral and vanilla greet the nose. The palate offers dark plum, black cherry and spice with a finale of dark chocolate, vanilla and sour cherry on a long and luxurious finish. It has a beautiful mouth-feel with well-integrated tannins. This wine is full of personality and simply put, is elegant. Serve with grilled meat, wild game, stews and grilled vegetables.

Warm weather and wearing sandals are always conducive to making me happy! And, it’s time to dust off the grill and move the party outside. I’ll be popping open more white and rosé wine now. However, as you might know, I never abandon red wine just because of warm weather! So, in honor of the pink full moon last night and the 75-degree temps, I opened my last bottle of 2014 Mockingbird Hill Chardonnay from Napa Valley. I reviewed this vintage in May 2016. This is a delightful wine with enticing aromas of citrus, melon, pear and hints of floral. As I reported last time “the palate revealed lush layers of honeysuckle, pineapple, and honey crisp apples with hints of oak and vanilla. The finish was long with a touch of creamsicle lingering. Nice acidity and very clean.” This is a wonderful wine to drink as an aperitif. All the wonderful posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram certainly depict the joy, love and celebrations that are going around! I have been doing my fair share of celebrating, dining and wining as well and is the excuse for my absence here for a few days! I have much to catch up on, but the holiday season is far from over, so my posts will be spread out over the next week or so. To get the season off to a fun start, I had dinner with a friend prior to Christmas at a lovely French restaurant. We ordered a bottle of 2009 Rombauer Napa Valley Merlot that carried us through appetizers and entrees. This elegant Merlot is blended with 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petite Verdot. The color is dark ruby with enticing aromas of dark berries, plum and black cherry. The palate offers juicy notes of blackberry, plum and oak with smooth tannins and a silky mouth-feel. The wine paired beautifully with the appetizer of Mini Pumpkins filled with Mousseline, Wild Mushrooms and sautéed shrimp and the cod and lobster entrees. Koerner and Joan Rombauer founded Rombauer Vineyards in 1980 with first, second and third generation family members running it today. It’s interesting how a change in temperature can influence the palate. I awoke the other morning to crisp fall-like weather and my thoughts went immediately to making one of my hearty soups. I started compiling a list of ingredients to buy and perused my wine inventory for a bold red wine to serve with the soup. By the time I was ready to go food shopping, the humidity and heat had crept back in. The soup went on hold mode and the California Cabernet Sauvignon was gently slipped back into its resting place. With another heat wave on the horizon, I’ll revert back to “light” cooking and enjoying crisp, refreshing, chilled wines! Speaking of which… I popped open a bottle of 2013 Frog’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc, Rutherford, Napa Valley. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is “made entirely from dry-farmed and organically grown grapes.” Quote taken from Frogsleap.com The color was pale straw with vivid aromas of pear, citrus, grapefruit and a hint of floral. The palate offered a tasty infusion of citrus, pear and pineapple with hints of grapefruit and melon. A combination of lemon zest and vanilla lingered on the finish. This is a crisp and beautifully balanced wine that would complement a multitude of food in addition to drinking on it’s own, as I did. I’m off to embrace this warm but beautiful day! I’m thinking perhaps a white Burgundy might be nice for this evening!
Happy Thursday! Cheers! Penina With all the dreadful heat and humidity of late, my desire to “imbibe” has waned a little. For the past few days, water seems to be the big star in my glass. However, I did have a refreshing and perfectly chilled Sauvignon Blanc the other evening. The 2015 CADE Sauvignon Blanc was a great choice for a balmy night. Made with 92% Sauvignon Blanc, 2.5% Sauvignon Musque 3% Sémillon, and 2.5% Vionier, it was just the right blend of grapes that added subtle layers to the wine. The color was so pale, it was almost clear. Delicious aromas of soft citrus, peach, lemon and honeydew segued onto the palate. The texture was creamy with some floral and apple thrown in. Hints of honeysuckle and lime lingered on the finish. This was a crisp and wonderfully layered wine! Alcohol 14.2% CADE is PlumJack’s sister winery, located high up on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. The winery is at an elevation of 1800 feet and is considered one of the greenest wineries ever built.
