Most of my wine consumption for the past few weeks have been whites and rosés. However, when I recently received two red wines from the Chianti region I just had to open them despite the hot weather. The Renzo Masi winery has been producing wine for three generations with Paolo Masi as third generation winemaker. Paolo’s grandfather purchased the property in 1925. The winery is located in Tuscany’s Rufina district in the Apennine foothills where the estate sits on a hill overlooking the Argomenna Valley on one side and the right bank of the Sieve River on the other. Rufina is the smallest of the Chianti subzones and is considered one of the best areas for Sangiovese grapes after the “Classico” area. Rufina is known for its full-bodied, acid-rich wines. The climate is slightly cooler here due to the higher elevation of 1,000 ft. Rufina has a dry, breezy microclimate and is exposed to extreme diurnal temperature shifts. Stony soil and “galestro”, which is flaky shale combined with the climate, makes for ideal growing conditions. Chiantis produced by Renzo Masi are a mix of estate-grown fruit and those purchased from local neighbors who have been working with the Masi family anywhere from 15 to 40 years. Renzo Masi Chianti DOCG 2018 is a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Colorino. This is a very aromatic wine with notes of floral, red berries and sweet spice. It is a medium-bodied wine with the palate offering plum, red berries, raspberry and a trace of anise. It is silky, well structured and has good acidity. The price to value ratio is undeniably impressive! Pair with almost anything. Alcohol: 13% SRP: $12 Renzo Masi Erta e China 2017 IGT Toscana is a blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. “Erta e China” means ‘Ascent and Descent’ in Italian, referring to how the rows of vines are planted up and down a hillside. The wine was aged in used French barriques for about 14 months. It is a deep ruby color with seductive aromas of dark berries, spice and violets. The palate is lush with blackberry, dark cherry, plum, anise and hints of vanilla and baking spice lingering on the finish. A balance of silky tannins and acidity make this an easy wine to pair with an assortment of fare. This is another food-friendly wine. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $16 The Renzo Masi winery produces a broad spectrum of wines from entry-level to fine wines. Renzo Masi’s motto is “Big enough to be broad-minded. Small enough to care about the details”.

The temporary change in weather also motivated me to open a bottle of red wine. Having tasted a lot of lightweight wines the past few months, I was “jonesing” for some Chianti. Chianti Classico appellation is located in Tuscany, Italy situated between Florence and Siena and is the most esteemed and ancient area in the Chianti winemaking zone. Chianti Classico is a small wine region that produces DOCG wines with very specific rules. The blend must be at least 80% Sangiovese grapes. Chianti Classico Riserva is made with the best Sangiovese grapes and requires a minimum of 24 months maturation, including 3 months of bottle aging. Every bottle of Chianti Classico has a pink label with the Black Rooster seal, authenticating the wine. The label is a symbol of the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium. The bottle must also bear the DOCG label (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), which under Italian wine law is the highest designation of quality among Italian wines. Tomaiolo Chianti Classico Riserva 2012 DOCG is a blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is aged in oak casks for 24 months and one year in the bottle. The color is deep ruby with aromas of cherry, blackberries, spice, violet and oak. The palate offers dark cherry, dark fruit, cranberry, toast and a long finish of cherry and cocoa. This is a full-bodied, dry wine with soft tannins. Pair with grilled meats, pasta and red sauce, and seared tuna. SRP: $12.99 Alcohol: 13% I never did make the soup or pumpkin muffins, but there’s always next week!

It is a fun way for me to discover and learn about lesser-known wines. On this particular day, I was looking to see what the store had to offer for under $15. When I reached the Italian section, I saw a bottle of Ninety+ Cellars Chianti Riserva selling for $11.99. I must admit that I was not familiar with the label, but I was intrigued by the accolades that the wine store owner was giving it. So, I decided to purchase a bottle and see for myself. First of all, Ninety+ Cellars is a wine brand based in Boston, MA. Founded by Kevin Mehra in 2009 and with Wine Director Brett Vankoski at the helm, their concept is to buy a percentage of a winery’s production for a reduced price, bottle it in Ninety+ Cellars bottles and sell the wine for less. The website states, “We are a modern day wine négociant–working with highly rated wineries and vineyards to curate a portfolio of fine wines from all over the globe”. Every wine bottle is given a lot number and has the 90+ stamp of approval. Their wine portfolio includes Napa Valley, New Zealand, Italy, and France. Wines range in price from $10 to $40. 90+ Cellars Classic Series Chianti Riserva 2013 Lot 144 Sangiovese grapes are sourced from the Chianti region of Tuscany. The wine spends three years of maturation before release and therefore is given the Chianti DOCG Riserva label. The color is ruby with aromas of cherry, spice and floral notes. The palate offers red fruit, spice, with hints of white pepper and oregano on the finish. Mild tannins, beautifully balanced and impressive for the price. Alcohol: 13% SRP: $11.99 It’s hard for me to pass up a wine store, bookstore or knitting shop!

I need to burn off a few calories from my dinner last night. After watching the Patriots win the playoff game, (yippee!) I met up with a friend at a local Italian restaurant for some wine, mussels and pasta. It was a delicious meal, topped off by good conversation and many laughs. We drank 2011 Castellare Chianti Classico from Tuscany. Made with only native vines, 95% Sangioveto, and 5% Canaiolo, this medium bodied wine was ruby red in color with dark cherries, spices and herbs on the nose. Cheers! Penina I’m happy to report that I stayed awake for the entire Golden Globes Awards on Sunday. Considering that I was sipping on wine during the evening, I fully expected to nod off. However, I was thoroughly entertained by Ricky Gervais and many of the presenters. After watching lots of football during the day and prior to my friend arriving, I sautéed brussel sprouts, mushrooms and asparagus in garlic and olive oil. We baked a pizza and added the veggies on top. Quite yummy! We drank 2012 Da Vinci Chianti from Tuscany while we ate pizza and watched the awards. This was smoother than most Chiantis I am used to drinking. It is made with 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot grapes. The color was vibrant red with aromas of cherry, plum and spice. The palate offered dark fruits (mainly cherry & blackberry) with pepper, herbs and earth. This medium-bodied wine had rounded tannins with a nice pepper and spice finish. Happy Tuesday! Cheers! Penina Bel Giorno! Yesterday I began my review of the Kobrand Tour d’Italia 2015 eight-city tour of Italy. We explored some wonderful vineyards and tasted interesting wines. I now have three more stops to make. I made my way to Veneto, where Tony Apostolakos, the U.S. Director of Masi Agricola was waiting to guide me through a tasting of Amarone. It is interesting to note that Sandro Boscaini, the owner of Masi, is referred to as “ Mr. Amarone” due to the unique crafting of his wines. He uses the appassimento method to concentrate aromas and flavors in wine. The Appaxximento symbol can be found on his labels guaranteeing the authenticity and quality of Masi Wine. I’ll highlight a few of the wines I tasted. The 2011 Costasera Amarone was full-bodied with cherry, plum and spices. The 2008 Vaio Armaron Amarone, aged in cherry wood casks for four months, was amazing. The aroma and flavor of cherries, spices and fruit lingered on the palate. Before I departed I was treated to a taste of 1999 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. It had a beautiful bouquet of fruit and earth, with dark fruit and spice on the palate. http://www.masi.it The next stop was Piedmont to visit Michele Chiarlo, a family owned and run winery. Their grape varieties are Moscato, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Cortese. It is interesting to note that the wines are never blended. I tried a 2011 Reyna, Barbaresco, 100% Nebbiolo. It was flowing with dark fruit, spice and licorice. The 2007 Cannubi Barolo, also 100% Nebbiolo was full-bodied with notes of licorice, spice and firm tannins. Although I didn’t have a chance to taste the light sparkling wine Nivole, Moscato d’Asti, 100% Moscato, I was told the wine is so delicate that, Michele Chiarlo named it Nivole after the Piedmontese word for clouds. http://www.michelechiarlo.it/ My final destination was back in Tuscany with Ambrogio E Giovanni Folonari. The Folonari family began their wine making in the 1700’s and are considered among Tuscany’s top winemakers. Their portfolio is vast and with the array of bottles set before me, I knew that I didn’t have time to sample them all. So I asked Claudio Andreani to guide me through a few of the wines. We started with the 2010 Tenuta La Fuga Brunello di Montalcino. It was full-bodied and robust with dark berry and tobacco. The 2012 Tenute del Cabreo Il Borgo was smooth and earthy. Tannins were a bit chewy. Next was Tenuta di Nozzole Chianti Classico Riserva, 100% Sangiovese. Aged for 16 months in Slavonian oak vats, the wine was earthy with firm tannins. My last taste was a 1997 Tenuta Campo al Mare, Rosso, Bolgheri. This wonderful Bordeaux-style blend was rich in flavor. Dark fruit, licorice and a long smooth finish completed my day of tasting. http://tenutefolonari.com
Have a great Friday! Cheers! Penina So it seems that I need to backtrack a few days. As I mentioned in a previous post, I attended a wine seminar and tasting on Wednesday for Chianti Classico. The purpose of the seminar was to introduce a new classification to the top of their DOCG quality pyramid, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The most important elements of this classification are as follows: 1) Wine must be produced from a single vineyard or from a selection of the estate’s best grapes. 2) Minimum aging requirement is 30 months, including 3 months of bottle aging. (mostly French oak is used) 3) Strict chemical parameters & outstanding organoleptic characteristics are judged. We tasted eight 2010 Gran Selezione. They were all a deep ruby color with heady aromas and each one unique on the palate. The wines that “spoke” the most to me were the Antinori, Isole e Olena and Felsina. When I have time, I will elaborate more on my experience and share tasting notes. I will also have to catch up on the wine that I had last night as well!
Happy Friday! Cheers! Penina I put in a long day yesterday. So it was a welcome treat to go out with a few friends for a fun dinner and bottle of wine. We had Italian food and 2010 Casa Emma Chianti Classico. The wine is made with 90% Sangiovese grapes, 5% Canaiolo grapes and 5% Malvasia grapes. It was dark ruby with fruity aromas of cherry, strawberry and herbs. Cherry dominated the palate along with subtle flavors of dark currant and soft minerals. Fruit and silky tannins carried over to the long finish. Happy Saturday! Cheers! Penina After a routine workday, a friend stopped by last evening for an “after work/early evening” drink. As fate would have it…or not, I tripped over one of the many piles of things that I’m giving away and ended up icing my knee along with my drink. Good thing he was there to scoop me up! As I mentioned yesterday, my “wine tasting” evening on Tuesday ended with a vintage wine. It was a 1986 Porta Della Pietra from Greve in Chianti. Producer: John Matta. Written on the label is “Vino da Tavola Toscano”, which means “table wine” in Italian and represents the most basic level of Italian wine. However, this category held some prestige back in the 1970s and 1980s. Top-quality wines were produced under this title, but it doesn’t hold true today. So, with great anticipation, the bottle was opened and the wine decanted. The wine was made from 75% Sangiovese and 25% Cabernet. It was a dark garnet color and quite impressive for it’s age! Aromas of fruit and spice gave way to red berries, fennel and earth on the palate. After an hour of opening, the wine held up very well. There was a velvety mouth feel and lots of fruit that contributed to a long finish. And the best part is that I have another bottle in my “wine cellar”! I tried in vain to search for the vineyard. It is probably gone or exists under another name today. However, I did find the producer, John Matta, who now owns Castle Vicchiomaggio in Greve and is making wine! Hmmmm…. Have a super Thursday!
Cheers! Penina I’m writing this post on the fly. I have many appointments and lots of car travel today. In between all my work yesterday, I managed to make a big pot of tomato lentil soup. A friend stopped by for an impromptu visit in the evening. So, I gave him a bowl of soup and a glass of wine. We opened a bottle of 2010 Castello di Gabbiano Chianti Classico. This Tuscan wine made of 100% Sangiovese grape was ruby in color with earthy aromas. It was full-bodied with dark berries and tart fruit.
