Whether at the beach, poolside, or inside with the air conditioner blasting during the sweltering and relentless heat of August, I have a few wines to entertain your palate and cool you off a bit. However, I must stress how important it is to stay hydrated with WATER during these hot days, especially if you are consuming alcohol. It’s all about balance! Masciarelli Rosato IGT Colline Teatine 2022 Masciarelli Tenute Agricole is a family-owned winery founded in 1981. They have 350 hectares of vineyards located in all four provinces of Abruzzo, Italy, and are committed to sustainability in the vineyards and the winery. Masciarelli has 22 labels and seven product lines. This rosé is part of their Classic line (Line Classica). It is made with 100% Montepulciano grapes, and fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks. Nose: Floral and fruity. Palate: Delicate notes of fresh red berries, cherry, and nicely balanced. Alcohol: 13% SRP: $14 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy as an aperitif or serve with appetizers, light pasta, salads, pizza, and seafood. Carpineto Dogajolo Toscano Bianco IGT 2022 Carpineto, a Tuscan winery founded in 1967, is the producer of Carpineto and Dogajolo wines. This year marks a 30-year milestone for the production of Dogajolo Super Tuscans, specifically Toscano Rosso, launched in 1993. In 2009, Toscano Bianco was added to the Dogajolo line, followed by Toscano Rosato in 2011. They have 1,200 acres of sustainably farmed land spread amongst five carbon-neutral estates in the appellations of Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Maremma, and Alto Valdarno. The grapes for this wine are a blend of 40% Chardonnay, 30% Sauvignon Blanc, and 30% Grechetto. It is produced from estate-grown fruit from the Montepulciano estate, with each varietal vinified separately in stainless steel tanks. Nose: Lovely white floral, citrus, notes of tropical fruit. Palate: Pear, sweet apple, lively acidity, honeysuckle, and green melon. Alcohol: 13% SRP: $14.99 Pairing suggestions: Perfect for an aperitif or with salads, pasta, seafood, grilled white meat, or Asian cuisine. Emmolo Sauvignon Banc 2022 Jenny Wagner is the owner and winemaker of Emmolo, located in Napa Valley, CA. Emmolo is named for her maternal grandmother, who came to Napa from Sicily in 1923 and founded a rootstock nursery, supplying many local growers. On her paternal side, roots can be traced back to 1857 when her great, great, great grandfather made his way to Napa, kicking off a long history of farming and winemaking. And Jenny’s father, Chuck Wagner, and his parents founded Caymus Vineyards! This wine is 100% Sauvignon Blanc sourced from Napa and Solano counties. Nose: Citrus, melon, and white flowers Palate: Crisp, clean, and refreshing wine that is minerality-driven with white stone fruit, grapefruit, and green apple. Alcohol: 12.8% SRP: $22 Pairing suggestions: A great aperitif sipper or serve with grilled fish, seafood, salads, mushroom risotto, or sushi. Mer Soleil Chardonnay Santa Lucia Highlands 2021 Established in 1988, Mer Soleil is a California wine estate in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA in Monterey County. It was founded by the Wagner family, owner of Caymus Vineyards. This wine is 100% Chardonnay sourced from hillside vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The intense sunlight ripens the grapes, and the cooling breezes from Monterey Bay lead to a longer growing season, both contributing complexity to the wines. This wine is fermented and aged in new and used French oak barrels for approximately 11 months. Nose: Honeysuckle, citrus, stone fruit, and toast. Palate: Fresh notes of lemon/lime, green apple, pear, and vibrant acidity. Creamy mouthfeel with a long citrusy finish. Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $24 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy as an aperitif or serve with baked cod, creamy pasta, grilled white meat, or salads. Ettore Pure Chardonnay 2019 Ettore Winery is a certified organic winery in Mendocino, CA. Ettore Biraghi, founder and noted European winemaker, realized a dream of producing world-class fine wines in the Sanel Valley. He released his first organic and terroir-driven range of Chardonnay and Merlot wines from Mendocino. This wine is 100% Chardonnay organic grapes, estate grown in their Sanel Valley Vineyards in Hopland, the southernmost town in Mendocino County. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks. Nose: White flowers, tropical fruit, white stone fruit, and citrus. Palate: Aromas segue onto the palate with grapefruit and honeydew. It is unoaked, but there is a trace of butteriness…a complex and delicious wine. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $28 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy as an aperitif or with salads, seafood, grilled fish, chicken, mushroom risotto, or crab cakes. Stay cool and enjoy these wines, chilled, of course! I’m pleased to be a part of that passion at Saracina.” -Alex MacGregor, Lead Winemaker Located in northern California, Mendocino County AVA (American Viticultural Areas) is one of the most northern wine regions in the state and is north of Sonoma. There are ten diverse appellations with two distinct climate zones divided by the Mendocino Range. Mendocino tends to be defined as “coastal or inland,” and the ocean’s cooling effects vary on the vineyards. My focus today is on Hopland, an area in the southern part of the county and about 30 miles north of Healdsburg. Saracina Vineyards is a 250-acre family-owned ranch situated in Hopland along the Upper Russian River. Saracina is a Certified California Sustainable (CSWA) winery and vineyards with 140-year-old olive trees, vegetable gardens, and beehives. Forty acres are devoted to wine vineyards with six distinct parcels and diverse soils including rocky, black clay and gravelly loam. The climate is composed of wet winters and dry summers, with a substantial diurnal shift from warm days to cool nights. Saracina was founded in 2001 by a well-known husband and wife team in the wine industry, John Fetzer and Patty Rock. They named the estate ‘Saracina’ after a centuries-old farmhouse and vineyards in Tuscany where John and Patty spent their honeymoon. They brought winemaker Alex MacGregor on board in 2002. Alex, who brings a wealth of knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion to winemaking, has left no stone unturned when it comes to “pushing the limits.” He loves working with old vines, using native yeast fermentations, hands-off elevage (Elevage by definition is the process of nurturing the wine from fermentation to barrel to bottling.), and unfiltered bottling. Saracina’s handcrafted, limited production is testimony to the quality of their wine and respect and dedication for the land. In 2018 Marc Taub, the third generation of the Taub family and owners of Palm Bay International, a leading wine importer, became proprietor of Saracina Vineyards. Marc continues to maintain the values and quality of Saracina that began with John and Patty. Several months ago, I had the opportunity to taste five Saracina wines with Alex MacGregor at a Zoom wine tasting event. Saracina Sauvignon Blanc 2019 This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from two vineyard sites, Lolonis and Chevalier vineyards. The Lolonis vineyard has some of the oldest Sauvignon Blanc vines in the country, planted in 1942. The grapes were hand-harvested and barrel fermented in neutral French oak with native yeast. The nose offers beautiful aromas of melon, citrus, and white stone fruit. It is well structured with floral, grapefruit, white peach, minerality, and vibrant acidity on the palate. Alcohol: 13.2% SRP: $23 Saracina Unoaked Chardonnay 2019 This wine is 100% Chardonnay. Grapes are sourced entirely from 40-year-old vines at the Saracina ranch in soils influenced by the Russian River. It was cool tank-fermented with four months on lees. The wine has lovely aromas of white stone fruit, pear, citrus, and apple. The palate offers pear, sweet apple, and crisp lemon with nice acidity and a good, clean texture. Alcohol: 13.2% SRP: $23 Saracina “Skid Row” Malbec 2018 The grapes for this 100% Malbec were planted in 1999 in Skid Row Vineyard in the westernmost block on the Saracina ranch. The plant material is the original Bordeaux clone 4 and is the lowest-yielding commercial Malbec available, producing concentrated fruit. This wine is aged in thin-stave French oak barrels (15% new wood) for 19 months. “The vineyard was named “Skid Row” for the tracks carved into the surrounding hillsides in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by donkeys dragging logs down to the vineyard site, where they were collected to fire the furnaces for hop barns in the course of making beer.” Alluring aromas of dark berries, dark cherry, plum, and a hint of spice set the stage for this delicious wine. The palate offers lush berries with a dark jammy feel, baking spice, silky tannins, and a lengthy finish. Alcohol: 14.2% SRP: $30 Saracina “Old Soul” Red 2018 “Old Soul Red by Saracina is a nod to Mendocino County’s adventurous history of exploration and discovery.” This wine is a blend of 43% Zinfandel, 31% Malbec and 26% Petite Sirah. The Zinfandel is sourced from two vineyards sites, the Chapman vineyard in Redwood Valley and the Sawyer vineyard that sits at 1000’ feet elevation. The Malbec is sourced from the Saracina estate, and the Petite Syrah comes from the Saracina estate’s steep hillside and the Niemi vineyard with 20-year-old vines. The wine was aged in 10% new thin-stave French oak and four-year seasoned American oak for 18 months, Aromas of cherry, berries, and spice segue onto the palate with additional notes of rich ripe fruit, plum, and a hint of oak. Soft tannins balance nicely with acidity, and the finish is long and lush. Alex remarked, “This is a sophisticated and ‘more rustic’ peasant wine. The blend changes every year.” Alcohol: 14.7% SRP: $25 Saracina “Winter’s Edge” 2018 This red blend is 50% Garnache, and 50% field blend (Grenache, Carignane, French Colombard). “This unique old vine field blend is vinified from grapes picked from two single vineyard sites on November 6th, 2018 (post frost). From the Casa Verde vineyard, planted in 1944, we harvested a field blend of old vine Carignane, Grenache, and French Colombard. Casa Verde is dry-farmed and certified organic with 75-year-old, head-pruned vines planted on alluvial loam soils. This incredibly unique fruit is complemented by a percentage of Grenache from the Niemi Vineyard, where red soils with volcanic influence yield grapes with a plush and jammy character that adds weight, texture, and ripeness to the final blend.”- Saracina vintage notes. The free-run, drained juice underwent native malolactic fermentation that took 12 months to complete. The wine was then aged for 19 months in older Francois Freres barrels. This is a vibrant, bold, and juicy wine with aromas of rose, ripe red fruit, and baking spice. The palate is layered with sour cherry, pomegranate, raspberry, and a touch of pepper. Mild tannins, brilliant acidity, or, as Alex says, “crunchy acidity” lead to a long finish to savor it all!

Mon Frère Winery Mon Frère means ‘my brother’ in French, and the Mon Frère Winery dedicates their three wines to special and rare friends who feel like family. Located in Napa, CA, the winery is a partnership between legendary winemaker, Tom Hinde and family-owned wine and spirits organization Palm Bay International. Tom Hinde, head winemaker, brings his 30+ years of knowledge and talent for California wines to the table. The winery sources the best quality grapes throughout California’s wine regions, selecting different clones of the same grape. For their Chardonnay, grapes are chosen and blended from the coastal region’s Lodi, Mendocino and Monterey vineyards. Pinot Noir is a blend of grapes from the Sonoma Coast, Santa Rita Hills, and the highlands of Santa Barbara and Santa Lucia. Mon Frère wanted to focus on making the Cabernet Sauvignon as versatile as possible. Grapes are sourced from vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino (coast) and blended with grapes from vineyards in Lodi and Paso Robles. I received a sample of the Cabernet Sauvignon, and now I can't wait to try their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay! Mon Frère Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 As stated above, the grapes are sourced from different vineyards and locations. The climate is a mixture of warmer Mediterranean areas and cooler coastal areas giving this wine a nice balance between structure, freshness, and fruit. Grapes are pressed and undergo fermentation separately. After they are blended, the wine ages in a mix of French oak (90%) and American oak (10% new). This wine is a beautiful and inviting garnet color. Juicy aromas of dark cherry, dark berries, baking spice, and toasty notes segue onto the palate. Rich, ripe fruit with plum, spice, and oak notes dance on the palate. Silky tannins contribute to the fine structure and expression of this wine. Pair with grilled meat, seared tuna, hearty pasta, and stews.

The patriarch is Kurt Schoeneman, his daughter Sarah, Sarah’s husband Guy Pacurar, their daughter, Ella, and Guy’s older daughter, Taylor. The winery is located in Anderson Valley of the coastal region of Mendocino County in Northern California. Their story began in 1996 with Sarah Schoeneman helping her father Kurt Schoeneman research the perfect area to grow grapes. She found a parcel of land in the Anderson Valley, the Ferrington Vineyard, which was long neglected. Kurt, who was a builder, knew nothing about wine. So he wisely sought out the expertise of vineyard managers and winemakers in the industry while also taking courses in viticulture. With love and determination, the Ferrington Vineyard was restored and is today recognized for its premium quality grapes They have 72 acres under vine that include Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer. The vineyard is especially noted for its signature fruit, Pinot Noir, in addition to a block of 40+ year-old Sauvignon Blanc vines. Most of the grapes for their wines are sourced from this vineyard. However, grapes for their rustic sparkling wine are sourced from Roederer’s Estate Vineyard. For many years F&D has sold their grapes to high-end labels without producing or bottling their own wine. However, that all changed with the first vintage for their own label in 2012. It also happened to be the birth year of Ella, Sarah and Guy’s daughter and the inspiration behind creating the label. Phil Baxter, a well-known and talented winemaker, was consulted about wine production. Not only did Phil oversee the production of their inaugural vintage of Ella’s Reserve Pinot Noir, he now oversees the winemaking for F&D’s successive vintages. To quote Guy regarding production, “Fathers & Daughters is a high-touch, small production family venture. You will find our fingerprints on every step of the process, from the harvest to the press, to the bottle. We produce all of our wines at Baxter Winery.” Here are three impressive wines that I received from Fathers & Daughters Cellars. Sarah’s Rustic Bubbles Sparkling Chardonnay 2018 The grapes for this 100% Chardonnay were sourced from the Roederer Estate. It is produced using the Pétillant-Naturel method (pét- nat), a very old technique for making natural wines. It is often referred to as Méthode Ancestrale, which predates the “traditional method”. Unlike traditional-method sparkling wines that go through two fermentations, Pétillant-Naturel goes through only one fermentation. The wine is allowed to ferment naturally in stainless steel barrels. When the sugar has dropped significantly, the wine is bottled, crown-capped and unfiltered to allow the yeast to complete fermentation in the bottle and under pressure. The result is an intense array of aromas, flavors, effervescence and yeast. F&D suggests serving the wine “deeply chilled”. And I suggest uncapping it gently over a sink with a wine glass close by. The foam that spews forth is both festive and quite aromatic! Apples, baked bread, floral and citrus tantalize the nose while the palate is entertained with a fine mousse texture and hints of lemon, apricot, tropical notes and a touch of minerality. Alcohol: 13.9% SRP: $21 Sauvignon Blanc 2019 The grapes for this wine were harvested from vines originally planted in the late 70s in the Ferrington Vineyard. Lovely aromas of floral, citrus and melon segue onto the palate with notes of ruby grapefruit, lime, sweet apple, a touch of minerality and herbs. This is a refreshing wine that blends sweet and savory with just the right amount of acidity. Alcohol: 12.8% SRP: $25 Ella’s Reserve Pinot Noir 2017 Twenty-five acres of Ferrington Vineyard is dedicated to multiple clones of Pinot Noir, the signature grape of this vineyard. The clones used for this wine are Pommard, known for its dark color, intense fruit and fragrant spice components and Waldenswil, known for its floral, spice and bright red fruit. The wine is aged 20 months in 25% once used and 75% neutral French oak barrels before bottling. This wine starts out with heady aromas of floral, baking spice, dark plum, berries and dark cherry. The palate offers juicy plum, strawberries, cherry, and a touch of toasted herbs rounded out with a dash of earth, nutmeg and minerality. It is vibrant, smooth, complex and beautifully balanced.

So, for the last several months my wine glass and I have been “virtually” touring wine regions while sipping wine from the comfort of home. In early March and in anticipation of spring I reviewed six rosés, which hopefully you’ve had a chance to taste and enjoy. And now with the summer days upon us, it’s time for another review of seven more delectable rosés in a variety of styles from wine regions around the world. Jean-Luc Colombo Cape Bleue Rosé 2019 About one year ago I opened a bottle of 2004 Les Ruchets Cornas from Jean-Luc Colombo winery located in the northern appellation of Cornas in the Rhône Valley, France. It was a memorable bottle of wine and worthy of a review. So I was quite excited to taste this producer’s rosé. The wine is a blend of 67% Syrah and 33% Mourvèdre grapes sourced from the stony limestone vineyards located in the hills above the bay of Marseille, next to Provence. The vineyards enjoy the influence of the sea and sun with hot days and cool nights that are ideal conditions for grape growing. This soft pink blend has delicate aromas of rose petals, cherry and sweet melon. The palate offers notes of berries, cherry and peach with a hint of citrus and minerality. It is nicely balanced with fresh acidity. Enjoy as an aperitif or with appetizers, light salads or grilled fish. Alcohol: 12.5% SRP: $14.99 Valdo Floral Rosé Brut NV This wine is produced by the historic Valdo Spumanti winery that specializes in Prosecco and sparkling wines. It was founded in 1926 and is located in Valdobbiadene in the Treviso area of the Veneto. The grapes for this wine are sourced from some of my favorite areas in Italy, Veneto and Sicily. The wine is a blend of 75% Nerello Mascalese harvested from vineyards on the lower slopes of the Etna volcano in Sicily and 25% Glera (the grape varietal of Prosecco) harvested from vineyards in the Veneto. This wine is produced using the Charmat method followed by a minimum of two months in the bottle. This is a lively sparkling wine with aromas of rose petals, strawberry, raspberry and cherry that segue onto the palate with a fine perlage. A profusion of red berries dances on the palate with a soft and creamy texture. This sparkling wine is elegant and fun to drink. Alcohol: 11.5% SRP: $15.99 Leitz Pinot Noir Rosé Trocken 2018 This rosé is produced by Weingut Josef Leitz, which is located in the Rheingau wine region of Germany. They are considered one of the top growers and among the finest producers in Germany. This wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from the Johannisberg appellation in the Rheingau. This wine is very aromatic with lots of floral notes and fresh red fruit. It is deliciously bone dry with zingy acidity and a palate layered with cherry, cranberry, strawberry and a touch of minerality. This wine is refreshing and full of character. A perfect aperitif! Alcohol: 12% SRP: $17 Bertani Bertarose Rosé IGT 2019 The historic Bertani winery is located in the Veneto region of Italy and is famous for its production of Amarone. They are also known for their Bertarose, another historic Bertani wine that began production in the 1930s and has since been given a modern makeover. Made with 75% Molinaro and 25% Merlot, these grapes are sourced from hillside vineyards above Lake Garda on calcareous-clay soils. The grapes are vinified separately and then blended and aged in stainless steel tanks for about three months on the lees. Delectable aromas of floral, a mix of red and dark fruit and grapefruit set the stage for this fresh and well-balanced wine. The palate offers white flowers, pink grapefruit, strawberry, apricot and a hint of cherry. It is a perfect dance between acidity and salinity. Serve as an aperitif or pair with appetizers, grilled fish, white meat, vegetables, or light pasta. Alcohol: 12% SRP: $18.99 Saracina Skid Rosé 2019 Saracina winery is a 250-acre ranch located in Mendocino County in the Upper Russian River Valley of northern California. This wine is 100% Malbec harvested from the black clay and gravelly soils in sustainably farmed vineyards of the westernmost block of the Saracina Ranch. It is handcrafted with limited production. A bouquet of floral, red fruit and melon opens to a refreshing palate of strawberry rhubarb pie, red berries and a hint of spice. This is a delightfully dry and crisp wine. Enjoy as an aperitif or serve with light fare. Alcohol: 12.8% SRP: $19.99 Planeta Rosé Sicilia DOC 2019 Having tasted and enjoyed many Planeta wines, I was quite eager to try their rosé. Planeta has vineyard locations in five territories spread throughout Sicily from east to west with six boutique wineries. The grapes for this rosé were sourced from Dispensa Estate in Menfi (western Sicily) and is a blend of 50% Nero d’Avola and 50% Merlot. Delightful aromas of floral, berries and melon segue onto the palate with white stone fruit and a dash of tropical fruit. This is a refreshing and dry wine with crisp acidity and hints of minerality and salinity. Enjoy as an aperitif or with light fare. Alcohol: 12.55 SRP: $19.99 Pasqua “11 Minutes” Rosé Tre Venezie IGT 2019 Pasqua Vigneti é Cantine is located in Verona, Italy and has complete control over 741 acres of vineyards (1/3 is estate-owned) that spreads from Lake Garda to Soave. Many of Pasqua’s vineyards are located in Valpolicella Estesa. This wine is a masterful blend of 50% Corvina, 15% Syrah, 25% Trebbiano di Lugana and 10% Carmenere. And why is it called “11 minutes” rosé? After harvest, the grapes are gently pressed and with only 11 minutes of skin contact the most noteworthy qualities of the grapes are extracted and the color is obtained. It is a beautiful bottle with an unusual oval shape and an alluring photo of Lesbia. And this wine does not disappoint! Intoxicating aromas of floral, lush berries, spice and melon spill onto the palate with succulent berries, spice, racy acidity and minerality adding to the richness and elegance of this wine. Enjoy as an aperitif or with light fare.

In my last post I shared my thoughts about a lovely sparkling rosé from the Vinho Verde region of Portugal. So now let’s travel to another continent and explore a delicious rosé from Lazy Creek Vineyards located in Anderson Valley, Mendocino County, California. It is the second oldest vineyard in the valley dating back to the early 1900s when an Italian family established the 95-acre property for farming. In 1969, Hans and Theresa Kobler, natives of Switzerland, purchased the property and converted the old barn into a winery and planted Pinot Noir, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay vines that they brought by suitcase from Europe! After a “fruitful” run of 26 years and 19-planted vineyards, it was sold again in 1998 to Josh and Mary Beth Chandler. Ten years later in 2008, Don and Rhonda Carano purchased the 95-acre ranch which now had about 40 acres of grapes including Riesling. Don and Rhonda are no strangers to growing grapes, having first purchased a small ranch in 1979 in the Alexander Valley where they grew a few acres of Gewürztraminer. Their passion and commitment to sustainability transcends to the wines that they produce. Lazy Creek Winery was recently awarded a sustainable certification by the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. Lazy Creek Vineyards 2015 Rosé of Pinot Noir is a noteworthy wine made from 100% Pinot Noir. The color is light coral with delicate floral aromas mixed with strawberry, grapefruit and melon. The palate offers strawberry, honeydew and watermelon with hints of nectarine. This medium bodied wine has richness to it but is light at the same time. A dry and crisp finish gives way to flavors that persist for a satisfying conclusion. Serve chilled with just about any food.
