The historic San Felice Wine Estate is located in the heart of Chianti Classico in the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga in Tuscany, Italy. The estate covers an area of more than 650 hectares. There are 150 hectares of wine vineyards, 80% of which is devoted to Sangiovese, the heart of their production. Their presence extends to the prestigious terroirs of Montalcino and Bolgheri as well. San Felice has approximately 17,000 olive trees, experimental plantations, and a hotel complex. Known for its innovation and research to rejuvenate and preserve nearly extinct ancient Tuscan grape varieties, San Felice has launched its new Vitiarium Collection. Vitiarium is a botanical Latin word, when translated to English, means “a nursery for vines - a work in progress." To quote San Felice, “This new line marks the beginning of a fresh chapter in a legacy that continues to evolve, accelerating the trajectory of this true icon of Tuscan wine. This journey now takes on a new identity: Vitiarium, a name that speaks to deep roots—those reaching back to the early 1980s, when ancient native grape varieties, nearly lost to time, were rediscovered and revived. The idea of preserving a forgotten heritage gave rise to an experimental vineyard dedicated to safeguarding Tuscan viticultural biodiversity, from which this new line draws its name. The collection includes Borgo Chianti Classico DOCG, Pugnitello Toscana IGT, In Avane Toscana IGT (a white wine), and La Pieve Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione—each an authentic expression of a land where tradition and innovation meet.” Over the past several years, I have tasted and reviewed a selection of San Felice wines from their three Tuscan estates. They are all noteworthy wines, as are the following four new labels from the Vitiarium Collection. In Avane Chardonnay Toscana IGT 2023 The name “In Avane” comes from “Avenal,” the Etruscan name of the area, which encloses a trace of the ancient culture present in the territory of San Felice. The grapes for this Chardonnay are hand-harvested from the San Felice vineyard and fermented mostly in stainless steel and partly in oak barrels. It is then bottle-aged for a few months. Nose: Beautiful floral and citrus aromas with a slight hint of vanilla. Palate: White peaches, fresh acidity, and a surprisingly long finish with citrus and melon teasing the palate. Alcohol: 12.5% SRP: $33 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy as an aperitif or serve with appetizers, salads, seafood, and grilled chicken. Borgo Chianti Classico DOCG 2022 San Felice said, “Chianti Classico with a character that embodies the soul of San Felice. Sangiovese and Pugnitello come together to create a fragrant and vibrant wine, a faithful and authentic representation of our distinctive terroir.” The blend is primarily Sangiovese with a bit of Pugnitello. Grapes were vinified separately in stainless steel for two weeks and then aged for about 12 months in large Slavonian oak barrels before bottling. Nose: Floral notes, fresh dark fruit, berries, baking spice, and a touch of earth. Palate: Aromas spill onto the palate with cherry and forest floor. Spice and earth linger on the finish. Balanced, smooth and juicy! Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $33 Pairing suggestions: Grilled meat, seared tuna, mushroom risotto, pizza, or hearty soups and stews. La Pieve Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2021 From San Felice, “La Pieve Gran Selezione expresses the essence of San Felice's Chianti Classico. The Sangiovese, harvested from the finest company vineyards and vinified with care, produces a wine that represents the highest expression of the terroir. This is in line with San Felice's production philosophy, which has always sought to interpret the land through native grape varieties.” The predominant grape for this wine is Sangiovese, along with other native grapes. Fermentation occurs in steel tanks for 22 days, then malolactic fermentation and aging in wood for 24 months. It is bottle-aged for eight months before release. Nose: Floral notes of violet, dense red fruit, dark cherry, baking spice, anise, and cherry tobacco. Palate: Well-structured and silky smooth with aromas segueing onto the palate with dark cherry, vanilla, and hints of licorice lingering on a long finish. Alcohol: 14% SRP: $50 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy with a charcuterie board, roasted meats, stews, game, and Pappardelle al Cinghiale. Pugnitello Toscana IGT 2021 From San Felice, “Pugnitello is an ancient Tuscan native grape variety, whose name (little fist) refers to the shape of its cluster. Following its rediscovery, it has been researched in collaboration with the universities of Florence and Pisa in San Felice’s experimental vineyard. This wine is the fruit of 20 years of study and experimentation focused on saving native Tuscan grapes from extinction. Pugnitello is noteworthy for its distinctive characteristics, smoothness, and full-bodied concentration.” This 100% Pugnitello was fermented on the skins for 20 to 25 days, followed by malolactic fermentation, and then aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barriques, followed by eight months of bottle aging. Nose: Jammy-rich fruit and lots of baking spice, especially cinnamon and clove. Earthy with deeper notes of dark berries and plum.
Palate: Beautifully rich, fruity, and smooth, with a sweet and savory dance. Perfectly balanced and well-structured. Hints of cherry, plum, cocoa, cedar, and smokey notes do a sexy tango on the palate. Run, don’t walk to scoop this one up. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $69 Pairing suggestions: Roasted and seared meats, hearty stews, game, fowl, and mushroom risotto. With Memorial Day weekend in full swing, these wines will pair with beach sunsets, BBQs, outdoor and indoor dinners, or relaxing with a good book or movie. And, of course, they are perfect to sip all year long! Until next time, Cheers! Penina To leave a comment or if you have an inquiry, please contact me at [email protected] Spring is in full swing, with flowers blooming against a background of vibrant green foliage bursting from trees. Birds are nesting, and butterflies are reaping the benefits of sweet floral nectar. It is the season of renewal and the promise of new beginnings. With warmer weather upon us, I believe we are all ready to embrace the outdoors. I certainly am! As most of my readers know, what type of wine I drink is not dictated by the weather, but what my palate is in the mood for. Billy Joel’s lyrics from the song “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” ring true for me. “A bottle of white, a bottle of red Perhaps a bottle of rose instead” “A bottle of red, a bottle of white It all depends upon your appetite” So, with that in mind, here is a sampling of four wines I received, which will please your palate and pair well with spring, and all year round! Domaine Bousquet Reserve Organic Chardonnay 2023 Domaine Bousquet is no stranger to my website. I have reviewed and thoroughly enjoyed all of their wines throughout the years. This family-owned estate is in the Gualtallary Valley, high up in the Tupungato district of the Uco Valley in Argentina’s Mendoza region. This 100% Chardonnay comes from certified organic estate fruit and is hand-harvested from low-yield vineyards located at the foot of the Andes at an elevation of 4000 plus feet. 50% of the wine is fermented in oak for 15 days, and the other 50% in tanks. The wine is aged for six months in 3rd use French oak barrels on the lees for a Burgundian style. Nose: Lovely floral and tropical notes, with apples, lime, freshly baked bread, and a hint of vanilla. Palate: Creamy mouth-feel with beautiful acidity, oak aromas transcend on the palate with pear and tropical notes of pineapple and pink grapefruit. Oak and acidity persist on a long and delicious finish. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $18 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy as an aperitif or with seafood, salads, cream-based pasta, mushroom risotto, or cheese. Herzog Lineage Pinot Noir Clarksburg 2023 Herzog Wine Cellars has a long family history of winemaking that spans nine generations. Try as I might, I could not find any technical data or the aging process of this wine. Nose: Cherries, pomegranate, cocoa, and baking spice. Palate: Silky mouth-feel with cherries, strawberry, earthy, and a hint of baking spice lingering on the finish. Alcohol: 13% SRP: $20 Pairing suggestions: Roasted leg of lamb, duck with cherry glaze, grilled portobello burgers, or seared tuna. The vineyards for this grape are situated in the middle area of the property, known as “manine” or “little hands” which is a primarily flat area set between Collio and Isonzo. This 100% Pinot Grigio gets its coppery/coral color from slight contact of about ten hours with the purple skins before pressing and fermenting. Following fermentation, the wine rested for four months on noble lees. Nose: White fruit, melon, cherry, citrus, and wildflowers. The vineyards of the Yatir Forest are just 10 minutes away. As a rule, my mood dictates what wine to open, not the weather. And as I’ve mentioned many times in articles I’ve written, I’m not a “seasonal” wine drinker. I enjoy red, white, and rosé all year round. But of late, I’ve been looking forward to sitting outside amongst the budding trees, being serenaded by the birds, enjoying the scent of blooming lilacs, watching the sunset, and sipping a white or rosé wine! Pure bliss! And as much as I love all the seasons, I have a soft spot for spring because it is the season of renewal. And as Gustav Mahler, the composer, said, “Spring won’t let me stay in this house any longer! I must get out and breathe the air deeply again!” So without further ado, here are three white and three rosé wines to kick off the spring season and to enjoy while embracing the longer days and Mother Nature’s gift of renewal. Hat Strap Chardonnay, Los Carneros AVA 2021 This California wine is produced by Cline Family Cellars, established in 1982, a family-owned and operated winery. The grapes for this 100% Chardonnay are sourced from the Cline family’s J. Poppe sustainably farmed vineyard, the oldest Sonoma vineyard on the winery’s estate. Grapes are fermented in a mixture of stainless tanks and French oak barrels. The wine is aged for ten months in 35% new French oak barrels, 35% in neutral barrels, and the rest in stainless. Nose: Sweet apples, white stone fruit, tropical notes, and a hint of lemon. Palate: Juicy peach, pineapple, a hint of herbs and spice with a creamy mouthfeel, and lively acidity balanced with a savory finish. Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $25.00 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy as an aperitif or pair with salads, light pasta, grilled seafood, or roasted chicken and veggies. Herdade Do Esporão Monte Velho Rosé 2021 Herdade Do Esporão, whose history dates back over 750 years, has vineyards located in the Alentejo wine region in the southern half of Portugal. Monte Velho means “old mound.” and refers to a high point on Herdade Do Esporão estate capped by the ancient square fortress depicted on the label. Blending is a significant part of wine production in Alentejo, and this rosé is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, Tinta Caiada, Syrah, Trincadeira, and Arinto, a white grape. The wine is certified vegan by the European Vegetarian Union. Nose: Floral, red berries, and pomegranate. Palate: Aromas segue onto the palate with a nice balance of fruit and acidity. Until next time… Cheers! Penina To leave a comment or if you have an inquiry, please contact me at [email protected] Exploring wines from around the world has kept me occupied for quite some time. However, I think the adage “Are you missing what’s right in front of you?” applies here. As a New Yorker, I have explored and enjoyed the wines of the Finger Lakes region of northern New York, but I am embarrassed to say that I have not paid attention to the wines of Long Island, which is about a two-hour car ride from my home! Long Island is 118 miles long and begins just east of New York City and ends in the towns of Greenport to the north and Montauk to the south, which is the easternmost point in New York State. As you can see on the map, it splits into the North and South Forks at the tip of the island. Long Island’s small and diverse wine region has over 60 wineries located on the North Fork, South Fork, and western Suffolk County with three distinct American Viticultural Areas (A.V.A). The Long Island A.V.A established in 2001 includes Nassau and Suffolk counties and their off-shore islands and two smaller A.V.A.s Long Island A.V.A stipulates that a minimum of 85% of the fruit used in a given wine must be grown within the borders of its A.V.A. The Hamptons Long Island A.V.A was established in the 1980s and is located on the Southern Fork in Suffolk County. It is 209 square miles and includes all the beaches, shorelines, islands, and mainland areas in South Hampton and East Hampton. North Fork Long Island A.V.A was established in the 1980s and is 158 square miles with 65,000 acres and approximately 500 acres under vine. It lies entirely within Suffolk County and is home to the majority of wineries in the region. The climate on Long Island is considered maritime, with cooler summers and warmer winters than its more inland neighbors. The vineyards here benefit from moderating influences of the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island Sound, and Peconic Bay, creating minimum fluctuation in temperatures, extending the growing season, and allowing the grapes to develop more complexity and acidity. The climate differs a bit between the North and South Fork, with the Atlantic Ocean and Peconic Bay creating frequent fog on the South Fork. Loam, silt, gravel, and sandy soils can be found in this region. Sandy soils not only help to store heat during the growing season but the gravelly sandy soils aid in rapid drainage allowing the vines to harness their energy into grape production. A wide variety of grapes do well in Long Island’s maritime such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Here is a sampling of six wines that Long Island has to offer. There are wine trails to explore and an abundance of wonderful restaurants. In addition, many wineries have lodging and offer package weekends. I know where I’m heading this summer! Until next time…
Cheers! Penina To leave a comment or if you have an inquiry, please contact me at [email protected] There was a time when “oaky” Chardonnay ruled and made my palate sing as I savored the rich, buttery, and vanilla nuances the oak imparted. And then unoaked Chardonnay started to trend, and I found myself enjoying these lighter, refreshing wines that were fermented and aged in steel tanks, allowing flavors such as apple, citrus, pear, and minerality to shine through. However, I still enjoy oaked Chardonnay as long as the oak doesn’t dominate. About 20 months ago, I was introduced to and wrote about Ron Rubin and River Road wines. They recently sent me three styles of Chardonnay, but before I dive into them, here is a recap of the winery’s history and terroir. With a degree in viticulture and enology at UC Davis obtained in the early 70s, Ron Rubin fulfilled a 40-year dream, and in 2011 purchased River Road Family Vineyards and Winery. The winery is located in the Green Valley AVA, a subzone of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, and sits in the mid-slope “sweet spot” of the Green Valley. Green Valley – Russian River AVA Although Green Valley is one of the smallest appellations in Sonoma, it is the most consistent of any North Coast appellation in terms of soil, climate and flavor. Its trademark is the fog and Goldbridge soil. The fog that originates at the Petaluma Wind Gap in the coastal mountains defines Green Valley. Due to Green Valley’s proximity to the gap, this is the first place that the fog rolls in and the last place to burn off. Because of this, Green Valley encounters cooler morning temperatures for a longer period, more so than the northern parts of the Russian River. Temperature shifts are subtler here, and the cool marine climate, cooler daytime readings, and long growing season allow the grapes to slowly develop character and flavor as well as retain acidity and balance of sugars. This, in turn, adds to the complexity, aromas, lower alcohol, and freshness of the wines. Goldridge soil is the most predominant type of soil here. It is 60% sand, 10% clay, and 30% silt particles that are the remains from an ancient inland sea dating back three to five million years ago. The soil consists of a top layer of fine sandy loam covering a subsoil of sandy loam and fractured sandstone. The soil provides good drainage and excellent natural chemical balance. This is a perfect growing environment for cool-climate grapes such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With lead winemaker, Ed Morris, Ron produces two well-defined brands, Ron Rubin Wines and the River Road collection. River Road Collection Most of the wines in this portfolio are priced from $14-$20. The portfolio includes an extensive range of wines established by the winery’s former owners. Ron believes that good wine should be accessible, “exceptional wines at a great value.” A signature of this collection is its easy-drinking style. Ron says, “I’m a fan of low alcohol wines. I keep the alcohol in check to produce elegant wines that you can enjoy, glass after glass.” River Road Un-Oaked Chardonnay 2020
The grapes for all of these Chardonnays are sourced from both estate-owned and family-owned vineyards. Fermentation and aging for this wine are in 100% stainless steel tanks. This is a crisp and light wine with citrus, floral, and sweet apple notes on the nose. The palate offers refreshing notes of grapefruit, pear, melon, and green apple, along with a slightly sweet edge. Alcohol: 12.5% SRP: $15 River Road Reserve Un-Oaked Chardonnay 2020 What sets this un-oaked Chardonnay apart from the one above is that it is aged “Sur lie,” (which means on the lees), for four months. The objective is to produce a fuller-bodied and richer Chardonnay without oak influence. Aromas of apple, citrus, and stone fruit segue onto the palate with a creamy texture, a touch of tropical fruit, with white peach lingering on the finish. Alcohol: 14% SRP: $17 River Road Double Oaked Chardonnay 2019 No, this wine doesn’t spend twice the time in oak barrels. A special blend of American and French oak barrels is used to age the wine. The nose exhibits apple, vanilla, and stone fruit that follow through to the palate. This full-bodied wine shows vanilla, subtle buttery notes, white peach, and baking spice on the palate. If you are a fan of oaked Chardonnay, this is one to try. Alcohol: 14.8% SRP: $17 Enjoy these wines as aperitifs or with appetizers, seafood, poultry, light pasta, or salads. Until next time… Cheers!
