Summer has ended, but autumn brings its magic with mother nature’s dramatic foliage display, crisp “sweater” weather, and a season filled with apple picking, pumpkin carving, and grape harvests!  Photo credit: Stephan-H With temperatures beginning to drop, I’m focusing on red wines a bit more. Of course, I’ll be drinking white and rosé wines all year long, but with cooler weather in the forecast, I predict red wines paired with stews and hearty soups will start to replace lighter fare. And who can resist sipping a lovely Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carménère, or a Sangiovese from Chianti Classico? It’s a perfect way to welcome autumn. Here are seven palate-pleasing wines from Spain, California, Chile, Italy, and Oregon to pair with fall cuisine.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Bodegas Montecillo Reserva Rioja 2013 Bodegas Montecillo is Rioja Spain’s third-oldest winery and the second oldest in Rioja Alta, dating back over 150 years. This wine is a blend of 90% Tempranillo, 8% Garnacha, and 2% Mazuelo. It was aged for two years in handcrafted oak barrels followed by 18 months in bottle.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Nose: Juicy, red fruit, clove, herbs, and floral hints. Palate: Plum, cherry, baking spice, silky tannins, hints of cedar, and a touch of fennel on the finish. A fantastic wine for the price! Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $15 Pairing suggestions: Charcuterie, stews, hearty soups, grilled or braised meats and game, or seared tuna. Cune Organic Rioja 2020 CVNE (pronounced coo-nay) is an acronym for Compania Vinicola del Norte des Espana, and it is one of Rioja’s most iconic and historic wine producers. Two brothers founded the winery in 1879, and within six years, they began receiving international awards for their wines. The current owners are direct descendants and represent the fifth generation. This wine is a blend of 60% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo, and 10% Graciano. It is aged for six months in oak barrels.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Nose: Floral, wild berries, herbs, and spice Palate: Juicy and fresh with aromas carrying through to the palate with cherry, anise, and spice notes. Delicious! Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $17 Pairing suggestions: Cheese platter, meats, pasta, risotto, or stews. Josh Cellars Lodi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 Joseph Carr formed his own wine company in Napa Valley after spending a decade as a world-class sommelier and another decade as a wine industry executive. His dream was to have a family-owned winery, so in 2005 he began making wines under the label ‘Joseph Carr.” In 2007 Carr launched Josh Cellars as a tribute to his dad, Josh, who inspired and influenced the man Carr is today. “Every bottle of Josh Cellars wine produced honors and acknowledges his father.” In honor of his father, a volunteer firefighter in upstate NY, Carr created the “Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon” as a tribute. The winery donates $1 for every bottle of the Lodi Cab sold to either the National Volunteer Firefighter Council or local firefighter charities nationwide.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Nose: Dark cherry, berries, spice, and chocolate Palate: Dark berries mingle with cherry, plum, espresso, and baking spice- firm tannins and beautifully structured with a long finish. Alcohol: 14% SRP: $21.99 Pairing suggestions: Grilled meat, game, mushroom risotto, hearty soups, stews, or pumpkin chili. Viña Maquis Gran Reserva Cabernet Franc 2018 The Hurtado family, owns the Maquis estate, now in its fourth generation. Practicing sustainability, the grapes for this wine are sourced from vineyards in Colchagua Valley, Chile, where the winery is located. The blend for this wine is 90% Cabernet Franc, 7% Carménère, and 3% Petit Verdot. It is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Nose: Red berries, floral notes, baking spice, and a bit earthy. Palate: Lush fruit with strawberry plum, cherry, herbs, and spice. Complex and rich, but not overpowering. Alcohol: 14% SRP: $24 Pairing suggestions: Barbecued ribs, seared tuna, spicy Asian cuisine, grilled or braised meat, stew., or glazed breast of duck. TerraNoble CA1 Andes 2018 TerraNoble, founded in 1993, is located in the Maule Valley of Chile. TerraNoble initially presented itself as a boutique winery specializing in Merlot. However, in 1994 Chilean Merlot was identified as Carménère, So, TerraNoble committed to this rediscovered variety. And since then, they have extended viticultural experimentation and innovative winemaking practices to the Colchagua and Casablanca valleys. The grapes for this 100% Carménère are handpicked from their best vineyard plots in the Colchagua Valley at the foot of the Andes. 70% of the wine was aged in new and previously used 300-L French oak barrels, and 30% in untoasted foudre for 12 months. It was then further aged for six months in bottle.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Nose: Lush dark fruit, spice, earth, dark coffee beans, and herbs. Palate: Dark berries, herbs, and spice blend with silky tannins that are nicely balanced with acidity. The finish is long, with dark chocolate, espresso, and a hint of herbs lingering. Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $24.99 Pairing suggestions: TerraNoble suggests thick ribs, oven-roasted beef brisket, risotto, or seasoned foods. Querciabella Chianti Classico DOCG 2018 Querciabella was founded in 1974 with a commitment to quality, sustainability, and authenticity. Querciabella has continually sharpened its approach to biodynamic viticulture for over a decade. With vineyards throughout Tuscany’s Chianti Classico and Maremma areas, Querciabella exemplifies the respectful preservation of tradition through forward-thinking, albeit completely natural winemaking. This 100% Sangiovese wine is vegan. No animal products or byproducts are used in the production of this wine. It is aged for 12 months in fine to extra fine-grained oak barriques (225L) and tonneaux (500L) which 10% is new.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Nose: Floral, red cherry, red berries, baking spice, and a slight hint of licorice. Palate: This is a fine and silky wine that is fresh, juicy, vibrant, and elegant. Aromas segue onto the palate with hints of chocolate, plum, and sour cherry on the finish. Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $33 Pairing suggestions: Classic Tuscan dishes, seared tuna, mushroom risotto, salmon burgers, or Asian cuisine. J. Christopher Volcanique Pinot Noir 2018 J. Christopher Winery is a small winery in northern Willamette Valley, Oregon, owned by well-known winemaker Erni Loosen, creator and owner of Germany’s Dr. Loosen and Villa Wolf estates. Following his passion for Pinot Noir, Erni set his sites on J. Christopher, eventually purchasing 40 acres and planting the Appassionata Vineyard. Ernie and his team are proactive when it comes to sustainability. Maintaining healthy soil and vines is a priority. The grapes for this 100% Pinot Noir cuvée are sourced from vineyards in Dundee Hills with volcanic soil. The wine is aged 18 months in barriques (25% new), with no fining or filtration. Palate: Fresh, juicy, and elegant, with aromas spilling onto the palate along with notes of raspberry, pomegranate, and hints of oak and spice. Fine tannins and a silky mouthfeel add to this dry and savory wine. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $40 Pairing suggestions: Grilled meat, barbecued chicken, veal marsala, casseroles, stews, or pizza. One often hears the phrase “dog days of summer.” The origin of this phrase is related to the stars, not dogs wilting in the summer heat! Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky and part of the constellation Canis Majoris—the “Greater Dog.” The ancient Romans and Greeks believed that when the Dog Star, Sirius, appeared in the sky and occupied the same region as the sun, it created the hottest days of the year. The Romans called it “dies caniculares” or “days of the dog star.” For the ancient Romans, the dog days of summer occurred from about July 24 to around August 24. Over time, the constellations drifted, and the “dog days” dates have changed. This year it occurs between July 3 and August 11. However, it seems the heat and humidity are here to stay for a bit longer despite where Sirius is in the sky.  As promised last month, I’m back with a few more refreshing wines to sip this summer. Adega Pazos De Lusco is a 12-acre estate located in the heart of the D.O. Rias Baixas region of Spain, where the grapes for this 100% Albariño are sourced. The wine is aged for about four months on lees adding to a smooth mouthfeel. Nose: Floral, ripe tropical fruit, apples, and pear Palate: Fresh and lively with grapefruit, melon, and minerality, and it is beautifully balanced between alcohol and acidity. Alcohol: 13% SRP: $24.99 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy as an aperitif or serve with seafood, shellfish, salads, and light pasta. Darom White By Yatir 2021 (Israel) Yatir Winery has launched a new brand focusing on wines from the Israeli desert, the Negev wine region. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from the southern desert region. The wine was fermented in stainless steel vats and matured for four months in concrete vats. Nose: Floral, fruity, citrus, and a hint of herbs. Palate: Dry, with juicy white stone fruit, pear, and citrus. It is refreshing with a nice note of lemon zest on the finish. Alcohol: 12% SRP: $25.99 Pairing suggestions: Serve as an aperitif or with fish, salad, grilled chicken, and Asian cuisine. Anarchist Wine Co (California) Anarchist Wine Co is a creative project launched by the family-owned Napa winery, “The Wine Foundry.” Its premise is “winemakers gone rogue,” breaking the rules, “going a bit wild,” and offering a fresh take on winemaking. Here are two wines for your consideration. The Anarchist 2021 White Blend Winemaker Patrick Saboe got very creative with this six-grape blend, of which 55% is Gewürztraminer (a favorite grape variety of Patrick’s.) The other grapes include Viognier, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. Nose: Beautiful floral notes, minerality, citrus, and herbal. Palate: Fresh and lively with red ruby grapefruit, pear, melon, vibrant acidity, minerality, and a touch of lemon zest on the finish. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $26 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy as an aperitif or with grilled swordfish, oysters, salads, and light pasta. The Anarchist “The Skeptic” 2021 This is 100% Gewürztraminer, a white wine grape fermented on its skins to create an orange hue and extract the grapes’ rich flavors and aromas. Nose: Intoxicating floral aromas, orange peel, spice, and melon. Palate: White stone fruit, ginger, citrus notes, and exotic spices. A lovely and complex wine nicely balanced with subtle acidity and savory notes on the finish. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $32 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy it with grilled meat, seared tuna, spicy cuisine, and fowl. Ventisquero Grey Single Block Sauvignon Blanc 2019 (Chile) Founded in 1998, Ventisquero was first established in the Maipo Valley, one of Chile’s most important wine-producing regions. Since then, Ventisquero has expanded and diversified its holdings to include vineyards in Casablanca, Colchagua, and Leyda Valleys, and the Atacama Desert. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from the Atacama Desert in northern Chile and is only around 20 kilometers from the sea. Ancient, stony soils from the Huasco river have very special qualities: a little clay and a lot of calcareous soil, lime, calcium carbonate, and white soils that contribute to the character of this wine. Nose: Citrus, peppers, saline notes, and a hint of tropical fruit. Palate: Citrus, vegetal, and herbal notes combined with spicy pepper and saline. It is beautifully balanced with crisp acidity and minerality. Alcohol: 13% SRP: $25 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy as an aperitif or with seafood, shellfish, mushroom risotto, salads, and grilled chicken. Pagos Del Galir A Malosa Godello D.O. 2020 (Spain) Bodegas Virgen de Galir Winery, founded in 2002, owns vineyards located in Galicia, northern Spain, and is part of the Valdeorras DO. Godello is a white grape variety thought to originate in Galicia. The grapes for this wine are sourced from the winery’s premier cru vineyard. The wine aged for six months on its fine lees in stainless steel tanks, foudre, and 500-liter barrels. Nose: Floral, citrus, apple, pear, herbs, minerality, spice, and a hint of toast. Palate: A creamy palate with grapefruit, lemon, pear, salinity, and minerality, It finishes with floral notes and zesty acidity. Mouthwatering! They have an impressive 10,592 hectares of vineyards spread across Sicily. The grapes for this wine are sourced from four different territories and exhibit “a mosaic of identity” that includes an elegant Mediterranean bouquet.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Nose: Floral, white stone fruit, and citrus. Palate: Peach, grapefruit, crisp acidity, salinity, and very refreshing. Alcohol: 12.5% SRP: $15 Pairing suggestions: Seafood, grilled chicken, oysters, and salads. Or enjoy it as an aperitif. Francis Ford Coppola Sofia Brut Rosé 2018 This lovely sparkling rosé is a tribute to Francis Ford Coppola’s only daughter. The grapes are sourced from their vineyards in Monterey County, California, and are a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. This light and refreshing wine is perfect for kicking off any festivities.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Nose: Floral, tart berries, sweet strawberries, citrus, and spice. Palate: Ripe strawberries, citrus, and spice, with light effervesce, a creamy mouthfeel, and crisp acidity. Alcohol: 12% SRP: $19 Pairing suggestions: Enjoy as an aperitif or with light fare. Great with chocolate cake too! Las Moradas De San Martín Initio 2015 Located on the Madrid side of the Gredos range of hills in Spain, this is where the winery’s vineyards are for the ancient Garnacha vines that were recovered and had been cultivated since the 12th century. This 100% Garnacha is from a single vineyard with vines that are over 60 years old. The wine is aged for 17 months in oak. Alcohol: 15% SRP: $16 Pairing suggestions: Grilled meat, game, stews, paella, cheese, or seared tuna. Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2018 Family-owned Jordan Vineyard & Winery is located in Alexander Valley AVA, in the heart of Sonoma County, California. Jordan focuses on producing noteworthy Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Taken from different blocks, this is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec. Volver Tempranillo Single Vineyard 2018 Bodegas Volver was founded in 2004 by fourth generation viticulturist Rafael Cañizares. This 100% Tempranillo wine is sourced from a high-altitude (2000+ ft.) single vineyard called Finca Los Juncares, located in the eastern part of DO La Mancha, Spain. Fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels, and the wine is then aged for 15 months. Nose: Dark fruit, anise, and baking spice. Palate: Juicy blackberry, sour cherry, and plum with notes of mocha, kirsch, and toast lingering on a long finish. Alcohol: 15% SRP: $16 Pairings: Grilled meat, stews, tapas, or roasted lamb.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Riva Leone Barbaresco DOCG 2017 This delicious wine is 100% Nebbiolo, sourced from vineyards in the Piedmont region of Italy. It is aged for a minimum of two years in oak, of which one year is in French and American oak barrels. Nose: Red fruit, cherry, spice, a touch of rose petals, and earth. Palate: Tart black cherry, red plum, pomegranate, berries, spice, and fennel. It is beautifully balanced with soft tannins and a long finish. Alcohol: 14% SRP: $25 Pairings: Roasted meat, fowl, seared tuna, risotto, hearty stews, or aged cheese.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Wilson Winery Three Dog Zin 2019 Founded in 1992, Wilson Winery is located in Dry Creek Valley, Healdsburg, in Sonoma County, CA. This whimsical label features original art from local artist Mylette Lynch. A portion of proceeds from each bottle sold is donated to local animal shelters and non-profit rescues to support adoption services, medical care, and more. The wine is 100% Zinfandel aged for 22 months in French and American oak. Nose: Fresh red berries, spice, and floral. Palate: Lush notes of strawberry, pomegranate, baking spice, and fennel. Nicely balanced acidity and tannins with a long finish of spice and berries lingering on the palate. Alcohol: 15.7% SRP: $32 Pairings: Grilled meat, tuna, hearty stews, or pasta with prosciutto and fontina.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Borsao Tres Pico Garnacha 2019 Bodegas Borsao established the Cooperative of Borja in 1958, which is a group of winegrowers dedicated to preserving the quality and integrity of Garnacha. Located in DO Campo de Borja, Spain, the grapes for this 100% Garnacha were sourced from vineyards in the famous Moncayo mountain. This flagship wine was the first 100% Garnacha wine produced in Spain in 2000. The wine is aged five to six months in new bordelaise barrels of French oak. Nose: Beautiful aromas of floral, red fruit, and a touch of spice. Palate: Dark plum, blackberry, black raspberry, baking spice, and vanilla. It is a well-structured and rich wine with smooth tannins and a long finish. Alcohol: 15% SRP: $19 Pairings: Barbecue, grilled vegetables, rice and pasta-based dishes, cheese, and hearty stews.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Quatro Quarti Nero d’Avola Appassimento Sicilia DOC 2019 This wine is produced by Cantine Ermes, founded in 1998 in the heart of Belice Valley in Sicily. Palate: Lush dark berries, dried fruit, a hint of vanilla, and silky tannins with spice and cocoa lingering on the finish. Alcohol: 14% SRP: $10-$15 Pairings: Pasta, Grilled meat, chicken, cheese, stews, or risotto.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Time Waits For No One Red 2020 Finca Bacara, founded in 2016, is a winery located in Jumilla, in southeast Spain. The vineyards are certified organic, and this wine is 100% Monastrell, a hardy grape capable of withstanding extreme heat and drought. I had the opportunity to taste this wine while visiting Jumilla in November. With the New Year upon us, I find this quote about the wine from Finca Bacara very timely. “How often do you talk about the concept of Time in a conversation? “Life is short and every time is limited.” “We should spend more time together.” “Live the moment to the fullness” … The name of this wine came to us in one of those random conversations. Then we elaborated the idea with more attention to detail and, of course, our time. So enjoy it your way and explore the meaning of time. It's as simple as that. Crafted with care for random conversations.” Nose: Intense ripe fruit, smokey, with a hint of herbs. Palate: Lush red fruit, spice, balsamic notes, with nicely balanced tannins and acidity. So, what makes Ehret Family Winery’s Bavarian Lion Vineyards so unique? It is not only the location and dazzling views, it is also the magical grapes that grow here, the passion and love the Ehret family pours into protecting the environment, and a dedicated team focused on producing outstanding wines.  Drone view of Bavarian Lion Vineyards Courtesy of Ehret Knights Valley Bavarian Lion Vineyards is located in Knights Valley, an AVA in one of Northern Sonoma County’s most prestigious viticultural areas. Knights Valley earned its AVA status in 1983 and has approximately 2000 acres of vineyards. The Knights Valley AVA borders the Alexander Valley AVA to the west, Chalk Hill to the south, and Calistoga (in Napa Valley) to the east. Because of its sheltered location, Knights Valley is one of the warmest areas in Sonoma County. Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties thrive in this environment with well-drained soils, abundant sunshine, warm day temperatures, and cool nights. In addition, alluvial gravel soils and volcanic deposits have a direct impact in keeping yields low, which in turn contributes to more concentrated and flavorful grapes.  Knights Valley Map Bavarian Lion Vineyards and Ehret Family Winery The largest estate in Knights Valley is Ehret Family Winery’s 1800-acre Bavarian Lion Vineyards. With a passion and appreciation for fine wine, entrepreneur and German-born Pierre Ehret and his wife Susan purchased 2000 acres of land here in 1978. After selling off 200 acres to a well-known winery in 1995, they were left with 1800 acres of prime land.  Pierre and Susan Ehret Not wanting to disturb the biodiversity of this dramatic nature preserve, Pierre and Susan planted wine vineyards on only 1/4 of the property, covering 500 acres in 1996, and established the Bavarian Lion Vineyards. Pierre said, “It is important that the natural environment co-exists with the vineyards, and that the birdlife, wildlife, trees, insects, and fish are allowed to prosper.” Bavarian Lion Vineyards are Certified Sustainable, and they have a certification in Fish Friendly Farming from the California Land Stewardship Institute. A minimalist approach is practiced in the vineyards. All energy is derived from installed solar panels, and only rainwater run-off is recycled and used in the vineyards, eliminating groundwater irrigation. Since 1996, Pierre has been selling his premium grapes to prestigious wineries throughout Sonoma and Napa Valley. But in 2005, he decided to create his own label, Ehret Family Winery and took several of the best premium blocks for his wines. He continues to sell grapes to wineries at an average of 1800 – 2000+ tons per year and keeps 15-20 tons (approximately 1%) for his brand. I asked Pierre what motivated him to create his brand. Pierre: “I received so much positive feedback from all of our customers. I thought it would be a fun family project to make our own wine. Also, several wineries were putting our name on the back of their wine labels as the designated vineyard. And these same wines were getting high scores which I found intriguing.” In 2006 Ehret Family Winery produced their first vintage of Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon. After harvest, grapes are transported to a custom crush facility where Erin Green, the consultant winemaker, supervises and spins her magic, producing an amazing portfolio of wines for Ehret Family Winery.  Erin Green, Winemaker Erin has been with Ehret starting with the 2015 vintage. She is no stranger to winemaking and has an impressive background dating back to the 1990s. Erin said that she prefers consulting rather than running a winery. “I like the process from farming to production.” When Erin first arrived at Bavarian Lion Vineyards, she searched among the blocks to find the hidden jewels. Her goal was to try and raise the quality of the wine. “My first year, I worked with nine different blocks and was able to grow Cabernet Sauvignon as a very small berry and cluster. The berries were very dark, rich, dense, and concentrated. I like lighter crop levels to obtain more intense flavor and accumulate enough sugar and maturity in the grapes.” In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, the vineyards are planted to Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel. I asked Erin if climate change has had an impact on the vineyards. Erin: “It can get warm, and we’ve had some drought years, but we have three very large trap water reservoirs to help us. Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is tougher and can deal with the change.” Pierre added, “Knights Valley is known for its temperate and special climate. It is the fires that are our biggest issue, more so than climate change. The smoke from the fires can sit in the vineyards and contaminate the vines and grapes.” Bavarian Lion Vineyards has approximately 79 blocks ranging from 400-800 feet in elevation. All of Ehret’s Cabs are a blend of selected blocks, and the Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are produced from single blocks. Since 2015, Ehret Family Wines has been winning awards, and their wines receive high ratings every year. Here are three gems from their portfolio.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Sauvignon Blanc 2020 This 100% Sauvignon Blanc was aged in stainless steel tanks. Erin said, “The painstaking effort with which we crafted this singular expression of Knights Valley Sauvignon Blanc was worth every last second of the month-long ferment. Utilizing an extremely low-temperature tactic allowed us to enhance and concentrate the fruit expression this grape variety is so famous for.“ Nose: Citrus zest, white stone fruit, minerality, and a dash of floral Palate: Fresh and vibrant acidity with peach, grapefruit, melon, and minerality blended in. Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $35 Production: 440 cases Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 This wine is a blend of 75.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16.61% Cabernet Franc and 8.17% Petite Verdot. The wine was aged for 18 months in 52% new French oak barrels. Nose: Ripe berries, cherry, baking spice, and violet Palate: Silky tannins, dark ripe fruit, black cherry, pomegranate, dark raspberry, toasted oak, and cocoa, ending with a rich and persistent finish. Alcohol: 15% SRP: $75 Production: 505 cases Hillside Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine aged for 18 months in 78% new French oak barrels. Nose: Violet, dark cherry, and blackberry Palate: Rich and concentrated dark fruit with blackberry, blueberry, dark cherry, herbs, and dark chocolate. Oak and mineral notes dance around the palate with soft tannins and a long finish. Alcohol: 15.5% SRP: $115 Production: 202 cases Concerning the 2021 vintage, this is what Erin had to say. “The 2021 vintage was challenging because of low yields and limited water. It was 20% to 30% down in quantity. However, it is a small but powerful vintage with very tiny and flavorful berries…it is liquid gold! Nature gave us the crops, and we didn’t have to under-crop to attain low yields. It’s what the vines wanted to do this year, and we benefited.” I certainly look forward to tasting the 2021 vintage! So, where can one find Ehret wines? With a small production output each year, these hand-crafted wines are mainly sold online. Ehret Family Winery believes in “quality over quantity” and “passion versus mass production.” They have created an online Wine Club where members receive exclusive access, assurance of obtaining new releases, and special pricing opportunities. At present, there are about 150 members. However, one doesn’t have to be a member to order wine! Also, if you should find yourself in downtown Healdsburg, head over to the Ehret Tasting Room that they opened a few months ago. You won’t be disappointed!  Tasting Room And, if you feel adventurous and would like a customized and personal tour of Bavarian Lion Vineyards, in addition to a wine tasting, they are taking reservations. As Pierre said, “Experience how the natural environment co-exists with the vineyards.” Pierre and Susan have three children, Alex, Christian, and Isabella, born in Santa Rosa, CA. The family likes to divide their time between Sonoma and Europe, instilling in their children a solid European heritage and appreciation for culture, both in the States and abroad.  The Ehret Family I have tasted many of the Ehret Family Winery wines in the past few weeks. They are elegant, expressive, and memorable. My palate is still singing!

And then unoaked Chardonnay started to trend, and I found myself enjoying these lighter, refreshing wines that were fermented and aged in steel tanks, allowing flavors such as apple, citrus, pear, and minerality to shine through. However, I still enjoy oaked Chardonnay as long as the oak doesn’t dominate. About 20 months ago, I was introduced to and wrote about Ron Rubin and River Road wines. They recently sent me three styles of Chardonnay, but before I dive into them, here is a recap of the winery’s history and terroir.  Photo courtesy of Ron Rubin Winery With a degree in viticulture and enology at UC Davis obtained in the early 70s, Ron Rubin fulfilled a 40-year dream, and in 2011 purchased River Road Family Vineyards and Winery.  Ron Rubin Photo courtesy of winery. The winery is located in the Green Valley AVA, a subzone of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, and sits in the mid-slope “sweet spot” of the Green Valley.  Green Valley – Russian River AVA Although Green Valley is one of the smallest appellations in Sonoma, it is the most consistent of any North Coast appellation in terms of soil, climate and flavor. Its trademark is the fog and Goldbridge soil. The fog that originates at the Petaluma Wind Gap in the coastal mountains defines Green Valley. Due to Green Valley’s proximity to the gap, this is the first place that the fog rolls in and the last place to burn off. Because of this, Green Valley encounters cooler morning temperatures for a longer period, more so than the northern parts of the Russian River. Temperature shifts are subtler here, and the cool marine climate, cooler daytime readings, and long growing season allow the grapes to slowly develop character and flavor as well as retain acidity and balance of sugars. This, in turn, adds to the complexity, aromas, lower alcohol, and freshness of the wines. Goldridge soil is the most predominant type of soil here. It is 60% sand, 10% clay, and 30% silt particles that are the remains from an ancient inland sea dating back three to five million years ago. The soil consists of a top layer of fine sandy loam covering a subsoil of sandy loam and fractured sandstone. The soil provides good drainage and excellent natural chemical balance. This is a perfect growing environment for cool-climate grapes such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With lead winemaker, Ed Morris, Ron produces two well-defined brands, Ron Rubin Wines and the River Road collection. River Road Collection Most of the wines in this portfolio are priced from $14-$20. The portfolio includes an extensive range of wines established by the winery’s former owners. Ron believes that good wine should be accessible, “exceptional wines at a great value.” A signature of this collection is its easy-drinking style. Ron says, “I’m a fan of low alcohol wines. I keep the alcohol in check to produce elegant wines that you can enjoy, glass after glass.”  Photo credit: Penny Weiss River Road Un-Oaked Chardonnay 2020
The grapes for all of these Chardonnays are sourced from both estate-owned and family-owned vineyards. Fermentation and aging for this wine are in 100% stainless steel tanks. This is a crisp and light wine with citrus, floral, and sweet apple notes on the nose. The palate offers refreshing notes of grapefruit, pear, melon, and green apple, along with a slightly sweet edge. Alcohol: 12.5% SRP: $15 River Road Reserve Un-Oaked Chardonnay 2020 What sets this un-oaked Chardonnay apart from the one above is that it is aged “Sur lie,” (which means on the lees), for four months. The objective is to produce a fuller-bodied and richer Chardonnay without oak influence. Aromas of apple, citrus, and stone fruit segue onto the palate with a creamy texture, a touch of tropical fruit, with white peach lingering on the finish. Alcohol: 14% SRP: $17 River Road Double Oaked Chardonnay 2019 No, this wine doesn’t spend twice the time in oak barrels. A special blend of American and French oak barrels is used to age the wine. The nose exhibits apple, vanilla, and stone fruit that follow through to the palate. This full-bodied wine shows vanilla, subtle buttery notes, white peach, and baking spice on the palate. If you are a fan of oaked Chardonnay, this is one to try. Alcohol: 14.8% SRP: $17 Enjoy these wines as aperitifs or with appetizers, seafood, poultry, light pasta, or salads. Until next time… Cheers! I’m pleased to be a part of that passion at Saracina.” -Alex MacGregor, Lead Winemaker  Photo courtesy of Saracina Located in northern California, Mendocino County AVA (American Viticultural Areas) is one of the most northern wine regions in the state and is north of Sonoma. There are ten diverse appellations with two distinct climate zones divided by the Mendocino Range. Mendocino tends to be defined as “coastal or inland,” and the ocean’s cooling effects vary on the vineyards. My focus today is on Hopland, an area in the southern part of the county and about 30 miles north of Healdsburg.  Saracina Vineyards is a 250-acre family-owned ranch situated in Hopland along the Upper Russian River. Saracina is a Certified California Sustainable (CSWA) winery and vineyards with 140-year-old olive trees, vegetable gardens, and beehives. Forty acres are devoted to wine vineyards with six distinct parcels and diverse soils including rocky, black clay and gravelly loam. The climate is composed of wet winters and dry summers, with a substantial diurnal shift from warm days to cool nights.  Saracina landscape. Saracina was founded in 2001 by a well-known husband and wife team in the wine industry, John Fetzer and Patty Rock. They named the estate ‘Saracina’ after a centuries-old farmhouse and vineyards in Tuscany where John and Patty spent their honeymoon. They brought winemaker Alex MacGregor on board in 2002. Alex, who brings a wealth of knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion to winemaking, has left no stone unturned when it comes to “pushing the limits.” He loves working with old vines, using native yeast fermentations, hands-off elevage (Elevage by definition is the process of nurturing the wine from fermentation to barrel to bottling.), and unfiltered bottling. Saracina’s handcrafted, limited production is testimony to the quality of their wine and respect and dedication for the land. Photo credit: Penny Weiss Saracina Sauvignon Blanc 2019 This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from two vineyard sites, Lolonis and Chevalier vineyards. The Lolonis vineyard has some of the oldest Sauvignon Blanc vines in the country, planted in 1942. The grapes were hand-harvested and barrel fermented in neutral French oak with native yeast.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss The nose offers beautiful aromas of melon, citrus, and white stone fruit. It is well structured with floral, grapefruit, white peach, minerality, and vibrant acidity on the palate. Alcohol: 13.2% SRP: $23 Saracina Unoaked Chardonnay 2019 This wine is 100% Chardonnay. Grapes are sourced entirely from 40-year-old vines at the Saracina ranch in soils influenced by the Russian River. It was cool tank-fermented with four months on lees.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss The wine has lovely aromas of white stone fruit, pear, citrus, and apple. The palate offers pear, sweet apple, and crisp lemon with nice acidity and a good, clean texture. Alcohol: 13.2% SRP: $23 Saracina “Skid Row” Malbec 2018 The grapes for this 100% Malbec were planted in 1999 in Skid Row Vineyard in the westernmost block on the Saracina ranch. The plant material is the original Bordeaux clone 4 and is the lowest-yielding commercial Malbec available, producing concentrated fruit. This wine is aged in thin-stave French oak barrels (15% new wood) for 19 months. “The vineyard was named “Skid Row” for the tracks carved into the surrounding hillsides in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by donkeys dragging logs down to the vineyard site, where they were collected to fire the furnaces for hop barns in the course of making beer.”  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Alluring aromas of dark berries, dark cherry, plum, and a hint of spice set the stage for this delicious wine. The palate offers lush berries with a dark jammy feel, baking spice, silky tannins, and a lengthy finish. Alcohol: 14.2% SRP: $30 Saracina “Old Soul” Red 2018 “Old Soul Red by Saracina is a nod to Mendocino County’s adventurous history of exploration and discovery.” This wine is a blend of 43% Zinfandel, 31% Malbec and 26% Petite Sirah. The Zinfandel is sourced from two vineyards sites, the Chapman vineyard in Redwood Valley and the Sawyer vineyard that sits at 1000’ feet elevation. The Malbec is sourced from the Saracina estate, and the Petite Syrah comes from the Saracina estate’s steep hillside and the Niemi vineyard with 20-year-old vines. The wine was aged in 10% new thin-stave French oak and four-year seasoned American oak for 18 months,  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Aromas of cherry, berries, and spice segue onto the palate with additional notes of rich ripe fruit, plum, and a hint of oak. Soft tannins balance nicely with acidity, and the finish is long and lush. Alex remarked, “This is a sophisticated and ‘more rustic’ peasant wine. The blend changes every year.” Alcohol: 14.7% SRP: $25 Saracina “Winter’s Edge” 2018 This red blend is 50% Garnache, and 50% field blend (Grenache, Carignane, French Colombard). “This unique old vine field blend is vinified from grapes picked from two single vineyard sites on November 6th, 2018 (post frost). From the Casa Verde vineyard, planted in 1944, we harvested a field blend of old vine Carignane, Grenache, and French Colombard. Casa Verde is dry-farmed and certified organic with 75-year-old, head-pruned vines planted on alluvial loam soils. This incredibly unique fruit is complemented by a percentage of Grenache from the Niemi Vineyard, where red soils with volcanic influence yield grapes with a plush and jammy character that adds weight, texture, and ripeness to the final blend.”- Saracina vintage notes. The free-run, drained juice underwent native malolactic fermentation that took 12 months to complete. The wine was then aged for 19 months in older Francois Freres barrels.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss This is a vibrant, bold, and juicy wine with aromas of rose, ripe red fruit, and baking spice. The palate is layered with sour cherry, pomegranate, raspberry, and a touch of pepper. Mild tannins, brilliant acidity, or, as Alex says, “crunchy acidity” lead to a long finish to savor it all!
Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $30 The white wines are perfect for aperitifs or pair with oysters, seafood, or spicy Asian cuisine. Enjoy the reds with a charcuterie plate, grilled meat, fowl, or hearty stews. With autumn just around the corner, it’s time to start exploring a few red wines. However, I can assure you that I will be writing about white, rosé, and sparkling wines all year long! Today, my virtual plane takes us to Flora Springs Napa Valley Estates to taste some delightful red wines.  Photo courtesy of Flora Springs Flora Springs is a family-run winery founded in 1978 by Jerry and Flora Komes. In 1977 they purchased 325 acres of land and 60 acres of vineyards which needed attention, including rebuilding the winery. The property is situated among vineyards planted in the late 1800s and is now part of the estate vineyards. Today, their son John is the president, and both he and his sister Julie, are the proprietors of the estate. In addition, Julie’s husband, Pat Garvey, is the vineyard director and proprietor.  Jerry & Flora Komes Photo credit: Flora Springs Since Jerry and Flora’s retirement and subsequent passing, (Jerry died in 2001 and Flora died in 2012), the Komes-Garvey family, including the third generation, have carried on the family legacy and expanded the estate to include over 500 acres of land, of which 350 acres are planted to vines. The estate properties extend from the cool, rolling hills of Carneros to the renowned sub-appellations of Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena. The family is all about sustainable practices in the vineyards that promote healthy vines and soil. In January of 2020, Daniel and Florence Cathiard, the owners of Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte in Bordeaux, purchased Flora Springs. However, the Komes-Garvey families will retain the brand name and tasting room in St. Helena. In addition, they still own 200 acres of other vineyards throughout Napa Valley including vineyards where grapes are sourced for their flagship wines, Trilogy and Soliloquy. Here are two elegant wines from the estate.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Trilogy, Red Blend 2018 This is Flora Spring’s flagship wine. The first vintage was produced in 1984. Sourced from the best lots of the Komes Ranch Napa Valley vineyards, this Bordeaux-style wine is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, and 9% Petit Verdot. It is aged for 18 months in 80% French oak and 20% American oak.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss It opens with beautiful aromas of soft floral notes, dark berries, plum, and spice. The palate offers black and red fruit, emphasizing dark cherry, plum, and black raspberry. This is an elegant but lively wine with just the right amount of acidity. Spicy notes with vanilla and cocoa linger on a long finish. Alcohol: 14.2% SPR: $85 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2018 This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced and hand-harvested from the Komes Vineyard in Rutherford and Crossroads Vineyard in Oakville. All lots were aged for 18 months in 70% French oak and 30% American oak barrels.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss Beautiful aromas of red and dark fruit, spice, and a hint of herbs spill onto the palate with layers of dark cherry, plum, anise, baking spice, and dark chocolate. The acidity keeps this wine on the lively side, but it always maintains its sophistication.

Photo courtesy of The Paring The brand was created by winemaker, Matt Dees whose focus and intent was to produce a line of wines that would complement a multitude of foods, from decadent feasts to casual fare. And, he succeeded. The knife depicted on the label is a paring knife, a versatile knife known for its infinite number of kitchen uses that no respectable chef would be without. The paring knife is a clever logo for these wines.  Photo credit: Penny Weiss In a nutshell, Matt Dees, who is in his early forties, was born in Kansas City, studied plant and soil science in Vermont, where he helped kick start a winery, and then returned to Kansas for a short time to work at another winery. He eventually worked as a winemaker for Staglin Family Vineyard in Napa and Craggy Range in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. However, his chance to really shine came in 2004 when he took on the position as winemaker for JONATA, The Hilt, and The Paring in Santa Barbara County, owned by billionaire Stanley Kroenke. Kroenke also happens to own Screaming Eagle and the Los Angelos Rams.  Matt Dees, Winemaker Photo credit: The Paring JONATA is their premium wine and is based in Ballard Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley. The Hilt, a more moderately priced brand, is located in the Sta. Rita Hills. The wines for The Paring, created in 2006, are a cut from each estate and produced from AVA vineyard blocks that are either too young or don’t fit into the vintage style of JONATA and The Hilt wines. The grapes for The Paring are sourced primarily from three Santa Barbara regions on the vanguard: Santa Ynez Valley, Sta. Rita Hills, and Santa Maria Valley. Here are three of The Paring wines sent to me for review. These wines are produced with minimal intervention out of the belief that “90% of the winemaking happens in the vineyard.” They are a true expression of Californias style wines. 100% Sauvignon Blanc aged in 1/3 new French oak, 1/3 neutral French oak, and 1/3 stainless steel tanks for ten months. This wine is unfined and unfiltered. Beautiful notes of melon, white stone fruit, and citrus segue onto the palate with refreshing acidity and a touch of lemon zest. Texture, depth, and character define this wine. Enjoy as an aperitif or pair with spicy cuisine, grilled fish, or bbq chicken. Alcohol: 13.5% SRP: $25 The Paring Syrah 2018 Grapes for this 100% Syrah are sourced from the Santa Ynez Valley. The wine is aged in French oak, 35% new, and 65% neutral for 22 months. This wine is unfined and unfiltered. This wine is all that you would expect of a Syrah. The nose offers violet notes, dark berries, and pepper. A lush palate of juicy dark berries, earth, baking spice, and pepper are accompanied by silky tannins and a long finish. Fire up the grill and be confident that anything you cook, this wine will pair well with. Alcohol: 14.5% SRP: $25 The Paring Red 2017 This Bordeaux style wine is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. It is aged in French oak, 55% new, and 45% neutral for 22 months. It is unfined and unfiltered. Lovely aromas of dark fruit, herbs, and earth set the stage for this smooth and structured wine. A rich, multi-layered palate of lush ripe fruit, dark plum, spice, anise, tobacco, and cocoa add character to a delicious experience and palate-pleasing wine. Pair with appetizers, cheese, grilled meat, fish, stews, and vegetables. Alcohol: 14.1% SRP: $25 These are expressive and all-around wines for the price tag. I’m impressed! Until next time… Cheers! It features a range of wines sourced from several AVAs such as Lodi, Sonoma County, and North Coast in California. All the wines are cellared and bottled by Federalist Vineyards. The Federalist pays homage to the Founding Fathers, Statue of Liberty, and the American Bald Eagle with etched portraits on each bottle. “Born from the virtues of every forward-thinking, hard-working, red-blooded American, this is The Federalist. This Is American Craft Wine.” And what better way to honor a national pastime? Turlato wines’ The Federalist has teamed up with the Chicago Cubs and will be offering their wines at stadium concession stands and restaurants during baseball season.
